2000s Supergroup Showdown: Audioslave vs. Velvet Revolver

Which supergroup from the 2000s was superior — Audioslave or Velvet Revolver? This is the major topic of discussion this week on Chuck’s Fight Club as part of the Loudwire Nights radio show, and as always, your opinion matters most.

Audioslave addressed the question of what comes next for members of two of the biggest bands from the ’90s. Rage Against the Machine had effectively gone on hiatus after the 2000 album Renegades, but guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk still had much to express musically. Seeking a new outlet, they enlisted Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell for three studio albums, each reaching the Top 10 and producing standout tracks such as “Like a Stone,” “Cochise,” “Show Me How to Live,” “Be Yourself,” “Doesn’t Remind Me,” and “Original Fire,” among others.

Velvet Revolver served as the platform that brought together former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum after their departures from the band. They recruited Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and found their sound with Scott Weiland, who was newly available after Stone Temple Pilots went on hiatus. The band remained active through two albums, including the chart-topping debut Contraband. A series of rock radio hits followed, including “Slither,” “Fall to Pieces,” “Dirty Little Thing,” “She Builds Quick Machines,” “The Last Fight,” and “Set Me Free.” Internal conflicts and an STP reunion offer ultimately led to the band’s conclusion after two records, but they left a significant mark during their time together.
