28 Years Later: New Trailer Unveils Exciting Details

The highly anticipated first trailer for the thrilling sequel 28 Years Later has officially been released, building excitement ahead of its theatrical debut next June. Fans of the original film can finally catch a glimpse of what?s in store for this long-awaited continuation of the iconic zombie saga.

Renowned director Danny Boyle and talented screenwriter Alex Garland have rejoined forces to craft a sequel to their groundbreaking film 28 Days Later. As previously reported, this new installment, titled 28 Years Later , is being developed by Sony Pictures and aims to kickstart a thrilling trilogy of sequels. The official release date is set for June 20th, 2025, and with the trailer now available online, fans can immerse themselves in the chilling atmosphere of this new chapter.

The impressive cast of 28 Years Later features notable talents such as Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). Additionally, fans will be intrigued to know that Cillian Murphy, who played the lead role in the original film, returns in a surprising capacity, adding an exciting layer of continuity to the franchise.

In the original 28 Days Later, Murphy portrayed Jim, a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to a dystopian England ravaged by individuals infected with a deadly rage virus. The creators, Boyle and Garland, experimented with various endings before settling on the one that audiences ultimately saw, which allowed Jim to survive. This sets the stage for his return, as he prepares to confront the horrors of another outbreak nearly three decades later. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the original film grossed an impressive $82.7 million worldwide and inspired the sequel 28 Weeks Later, which saw only limited involvement from Boyle and Garland.

Garland is also responsible for penning the screenplay for the subsequent project that follows 28 Years Later. Out of the two proposed sequels in the pipeline, Boyle will direct only the first installment. The second film, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, is under the direction of Nia DaCosta, known for her work on Candyman and The Marvels, and has already completed filming.

During an engaging interview with IndieWire, Fiennes shared insights about the narrative of 28 Years Later: ?Britain is now 28 years deep into a devastating plague of violent, rabid humans, with only a few isolated uninfected communities remaining. The story follows a young boy who embarks on a quest to find a doctor to save his ailing mother, traversing the stunning yet perilous northern English landscape. However, lurking in the shadows of the forests and hills are the infected. Fortunately, he discovers a doctor who, despite initial appearances, proves to be a beacon of hope.?

Thanks to their partnership with Sony, these upcoming films will be showcased in theaters and feature substantial budgets, with 28 Years Later having a production budget of $75 million, ensuring high-quality cinematic experiences for fans.

Boyle and Garland are collaborating with producers Bernie Bellew, original producer Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was instrumental in the success of 28 Days Later as the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures. Additionally, Murphy will take on an executive producing role, further contributing to the creative vision of the film.
