Get ready to alert Paul Rudd because the beloved 1988 classic and E.T. homage, Mac and Me, is set to make a spectacular return in 4K Ultra HD! This summer, Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to announce the release of Mac and Me in stunning high definition, courtesy of a comprehensive restoration from the film’s original 35mm negative. The newly scanned version promises to deliver visuals that will captivate audiences and make you feel like you’re soaring through the skies in a wheelchair, perhaps even off a cliff!
Here’s how Vinegar Syndrome describes the quirky adventure of Mac and Me: “When a family of telekinetic extraterrestrials find themselves trapped on a desolate planet, they are vacuumed into a NASA rover and transported to Earth, inadvertently becoming illegal aliens on the run from the U.S. government! As the family desperately seeks refuge in the surrounding desert, the youngest member becomes separated and sneaks into the home of a wheelchair-bound middle schooler named Eric. Initially unsure of his new friend, Eric and his brother Mike quickly grow fond of the pint-sized alien, whom they name Mac (short for Mysterious Alien Creature). While Mac adapts to Earth, developing a taste for popular soft drinks and fast food, he remains determined to reunite with his family. When government agents close in, Eric and Mike embark on a daring adventure to save Mac, hoping to reunite him with his loved ones before it’s too late.”

In terms of special features, fans of Mac and Me can look forward to two exciting new commentary tracks: one featuring co-writer and director Stewart Raffill alongside Jim Branscome of Cinematic Void, and another with noted film historian Wayne Byrne and Paul Farren. Additionally, there will be a new featurette showcasing the talents of the cinematographer and camera operator, as well as fresh interviews with Raffill, designer and puppeteer Christopher Swift, and star Christine Ebersole. Fans can also enjoy an archival interview with Allee Willis, the composer of “Down to Earth,” the memorable song featured during the movie’s iconic McDonald’s scene. This treasure trove of content also includes an alternate climactic sequence, an image gallery, trailers, and TV spots. But that’s not all—this release will be complemented by a stunning 40-page book filled with insightful essays, making it a must-have for collectors!
Mac and Me has gained a notorious reputation as one of the worst movies ever made, but it has also earned its place as a champion in the “so bad it’s good” category. This cult classic is a fantastic party movie best enjoyed in the company of friends. And what better way to experience its charm than in glorious 4K resolution? While a scratchy VHS might provide a nostalgic touch, this new treatment of Mac and Me is bound to elevate your viewing experience to new heights!
Mark your calendars because Mac and Me will be available in 4K on August 26th, with the release limited to just 10,000 units, making it a sought-after collector’s item!
