Action movies are generally larger-than-life, featuring a combination of stunts and memorable one-liners, but Sisu breaks the mold by introducing a virtually silent protagonist. Despite this, he’s just as compelling as many of the best action movie characters of all time. The hero of Sisu has been compared to “a modern-day Rambo,” even though he is portrayed by an unknown actor instead of a well-known action movie star.
The film stars Jorma Tommila as the formidable Aatami Korpi, and critics have praised it. Being Finnish, low-budget, and lacking a big marketable name, Sisu flew under the radar. However, it has become a sleeper hit, achieving a 94% positive critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews despite its extreme gore.
What Is Sisu About?
Sisu follows the scarred and silent gold prospector, Aatami Korpi, who discovers a rich deposit and prepares to take it to town. Unfortunately, he encounters a Nazi squadron that robs him. The rest of the film is a brutal cat-and-mouse chase where Korpi begins to eliminate the Nazis in an attempt to reclaim his gold.
The title of the movie refers to a Finnish concept that is difficult to translate, signifying perseverance against overwhelming odds. While it seems that Sisu‘s action hero is in way over his head, it quickly becomes clear that this is not the case. Korpi is an ex-commando who, instead of fleeing from the Nazi squadron, transforms into a one-man army.
The Hero In Sisu Says Just 11 Words
War movies are often known for their profound quotes and witty one-liners, with the most quotable war movie characters typically having the best scenes. Most characters in Sisu have at least a few lines of dialogue, but the film stands out because Korpi only utters 11 words during its 91-minute runtime.
Korpi is not the only action hero who remains stoic. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 robot made his career in Terminator 2, while Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Tom Hardy rarely delivers quips. However, both characters gradually reveal their human sides. Korpi’s humanity is expressed through gestures when he is alone, but his silence makes him even more terrifying to the Nazis he successfully hunts.
Why Sisu Is A Must-Watch
Unlike many action films that often depict innocent people caught up in violence, Korpi’s revenge mission has no undeserving victims. Watching him execute gory revenge against the Nazis is not only cathartic but also provides insight into other heroes, like the captive women he rescues, who return the favor in one of Sisu‘s most memorable scenes.
Sisu can be streamed for free on The Roku Channel.
Many of the death scenes are so violent that they become humorous, and it is no surprise that Sisu has been described as “an Inglourious Basterds reboot.” It is essential viewing for fans of action and revenge films and represents a rare achievement for a war movie to be this creative or for a hero to be this compelling—especially with just 11 words.
For those who couldn’t get enough of Jorma Tommila’s Aatami Korpi, the actor reprised his role in the official sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge. Like its predecessor, the sequel emphasizes action and violence over dialogue.
