Hilary Duff’s daughter doesn’t quite grasp her mom’s transformation in A Cinderella Story.

The 38-year-old recently revisited some of her most memorable scenes from film and television, including her portrayal of Sam Montgomery in A Cinderella Story.

According to Hilary, her daughter Mae quickly posed the question that has been on fans’ minds since the beloved romcom premiered in 2004.

Of course, the Lizzie McGuire alum was referencing the moment when Sam attends her school’s Halloween dance dressed as a masked Cinderella. That mask is enough to completely confuse her online pen pal/love interest, Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray), leading him on a quest to discover his mysterious love.

“My 4-year-old has watched this movie,” she explained in a video published by Vanity Fair on Jan. 20, “and also noticed like, how could he not know it’s you in that mask?”
