Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 4.The penultimate episode of Abbott Elementary Season 4 delivered an exhilarating experience for fans! Not only did the episode see the district reinstating Ava (Janelle James) following her unexpected dismissal a few weeks prior, but it also addressed numerous unresolved plotlines from the season. Indeed, the episode was so fulfilling that it almost felt like a series finale. However, with the beloved sitcom already renewed for a fifth season, there are still countless exciting storylines on the horizon. Among these, one arc stands out that we’re particularly eager to see evolve: the journey of (temporary) Principal Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams). In recent weeks, Gregory has demonstrated not just capability but an aptitude for a larger role within the school, and there are definitely ways to maintain his position without overshadowing Ava.
We, of course, love Principal Ava Coleman, and even though life was treating her well outside the school, it’s truly heartwarming to witness everyone uniting in support of her. Her comeback is undeniably essential, yet in recent weeks, while serving as interim principal, it’s evident that Gregory has introduced a fresh perspective and approach. During the April 2nd episode, we were treated to an impressive display of Gregory managing the school in a skillful and fulfilling manner. While the rest of the staff is preoccupied with their fundraiser and Ava Fest, we observe Gregory adeptly navigating his first open house as principal, showcasing his capabilities in a surprisingly exceptional manner.
While Ava has always excelled at crafting inventive solutions to enhance the school, parents still harbor numerous concerns. The way Gregory adeptly addresses issues that parents have voiced for years truly highlights the extent of the improvements that the school still requires, and he undoubtedly proves his ability to effect positive change. Moreover, his new role has bolstered his confidence, enabling him to resolve a previously dangerous feud. Earlier this season, he confronted Darnell (Langston Kerman). Although Gregory managed to deescalate the situation, his role as principal empowers him with the confidence and resources necessary to put an end to the conflict for good, ultimately benefiting both him and his student, Jabari (Steven John Singleton).

“It’s pretty crazy,” teased William Stanford Davis.
As Gregory embarks on his second week as interim principal, the show had ample opportunity to place him in a scenario that would justify Ava reclaiming her position. However, the narrative takes on a far more complex trajectory, further solidifying Gregory’s place within the Abbott Elementary community. The students show genuine appreciation for “Principal Eddie,” and even the staff recognize him as an exceptional leader. Remarkably, Gregory successfully negotiates a deal with the golf course that benefits not only the students at Abbott but also the broader Philadelphia community and the golf course itself. This impressive achievement is a testament to Gregory’s level-headedness and thoughtful negotiation skills. However, the case for keeping Gregory in a position of authority must also demonstrate tangible benefits for him. The latest episode unequivocally illustrates that Gregory’s life can experience significant enhancement through a similar role.
How Gregory Thrives in His Role as Interim Principal
While we’re thrilled that Gregory and Janine (Quinta Brunson) are maintaining a strong relationship this season, we have also witnessed Gregory facing financial challenges. He has resorted to jobs that he isn’t particularly proud of, and although he seems to have recovered from this source of vanity, the reality remains that Gregory should not be burdened with financial struggles. This serves as a poignant commentary on the realities of the education system. He already contributes immensely to those around him, going above and beyond as a dedicated teacher and leading the Goofballs. He deserves the opportunity to enjoy his life with Janine without the stress of managing multiple jobs. Given how well the principal role compensates him, it will be difficult to watch him revert to a situation where he has to juggle “three lives” after experiencing fulfillment in this new position.
Of course, it’s wonderful that Gregory has evolved into an outstanding educator, but that doesn’t mean he should abandon his ambitions that he was pursuing upon his arrival at the school. It was gratifying to hear him express that he still wishes to pursue these goals, and considering that even a character like Mr. Morton (Jerry Minor) contemplated applying to fill Ava’s vacancy, why shouldn’t Gregory take a step forward? The show has a unique opportunity to assist Gregory in achieving his aspirations without necessitating Ava’s departure or him exiting the scene.
The Dynamic Duo: Gregory and Ava Teaming Up to Lead Abbott Elementary
This season of Abbott Elementary has already surprised viewers with unexpected team-ups, and a collaboration between Gregory and Ava would be an excellent solution and an ideal next step for the series. We certainly don’t want Ava to face another departure, nor do we want to lose Gregory in his pursuit of a leadership role elsewhere. A combination of their strengths would be truly transformative. Should the show decide to elevate Gregory to a vice-principal position, Abbott could reach unprecedented heights without the threat of jeopardizing their success. Ava’s creativity has sustained the school through the most challenging situations, while Gregory’s calm demeanor and innovative thinking have served him and the community exceptionally well. By merging their skill sets, the potential for greatness is immense—not to mention the intriguing twist it would present for their relationship. Their dynamic has always been comically complicated, especially with Ava’s advances and subsequent disinterest during Gregory’s courtship with Janine. What better way to conclude that arc than to forge an unexpected partnership? It would undoubtedly stand out as one of the most clever and beneficial developments yet.
While it’s fantastic to see Ava back at Abbott, this should not hinder Gregory’s pursuit of his dreams. He has proven himself as a remarkable asset to the school, and it would be incredibly satisfying to reward him for all of his hard work. Continuing to challenge Gregory and potentially pairing him with Ava would not only be a significant advancement for his character but also for the show as a whole, enhancing its depth and complexity.
