Shein has faced criticism due to allegations from Black designers who claim the company utilized AI to replicate their designs, images, and likenesses without permission. Some assert that the company has even modified their designs for its own gain.
What is truly happening, and how has the company allegedly managed to do this?
Now, The Shade Room’s Justin Carter is investigating the claims and sharing vital information that every designer should be aware of on ‘TSR Investigates.’
Further Insights on Shein’s Alleged AI Designer Theft
According to Carter, when fashion content creator Sabra Johnson spotted a vibrant puffer coat vest in a runway video, she immediately wanted it. Its designers, Bruce and Glen Proctor, eventually sent Johnson the coat, and she took photos wearing it, showcasing her look.
Johnson went viral with her photos. However, she soon realized that her images were featured in Shein marketing campaigns — without her consent. Bruce and Glen then expressed their frustrations online, accusing Shein of stealing their design.
“They are stealing from small designers — typically Black and minority designers,” Johnson cautioned her followers online.
Essential Information for Designers
Carter indicates that Johnson’s claim seems to hold merit. Online, designers have reportedly been calling out Shein for years, alleging that the company has copied their work. Moreover, Jade Da Gem, founder of Dulse Clothing, believes Shein scraped her promotional photos and altered the skin tone of her models. Additionally, Johnson suspects that Shein used AI to edit her photos into a marketing video.
