Album Review: The Cure’s ‘Mixes of a Lost World’

The essence of remix albums inherently involves balancing the legacy of the original tracks with the anticipation of presenting something new to the audience. Frequently, it can be observed that the original songs selected for remix collections tend to overshadow their remixed counterparts. In many cases, what emerges is not a completely fresh album but rather a reimagined compilation of existing songs that have been skillfully restructured and recontextualized, setting the stage as the artist prepares for their next major release.

The Cure, a band renowned for its innovative approach, is well-acquainted with the remix album format. In 1990, following the monumental success of their iconic album Disintegration, they introduced Mixed Up, showcasing remixed versions of tracks from their first decade of music. The subsequent release, Torn Down, aimed to encapsulate the band’s evolution over the previous 25 years and was launched in 2018. Both albums served a significant role in the band’s discography, marking the end of certain creative chapters.

In contrast, Mixes of a Lost World takes on a unique mission: to breathe new life into the 2024 comeback album Songs of a Lost World by offering fresh interpretations of its eight tracks. Unlike earlier remix projects, Mixes of a Lost World features contributions from prominent producers and skilled remixers, who have each created multiple remixes for the tracks. The result is a collection that not only highlights the distinct styles of the remixers but also emphasizes the dance-friendly sound of the mixes, positioning the remixers just as prominently as The Cure themselves.

Curated by the band’s frontman Robert Smith, this album includes innovative remixes by notable artists such as Daniel Avery, Four Tet, Paul Oakenfold, and Orbital. Each remixer applies their unique style, filtering the original music through their creative lenses, allowing the essence of the band’s original compositions to shine through the various layers they introduce. Although the perspectives are diverse, none of the remixed versions surpass the brilliance of the tracks featured on Songs of a Lost World.

Nevertheless, several of these remixes unveil new textures and layers that might not have been initially discernible on the 2024 LP. For instance, the haunting darkness that lies beneath “I Can Never Say Goodbye” is brought to the forefront in Oakenfold‘s “Cinematic” remix, while Shanti Celeste‘s refreshing interpretation of “February Blues,” which reimagines the melancholic track “Alone,” is undoubtedly one of the standout remixes, showcasing the depth of Songs of a Lost World. Other remixers, including Sally C and JoyCut, explore alternative sonic directions, while meera‘s “All I Ever Am” takes a more radical approach by distancing itself from the original essence of The Cure. Smith has assured fans that there will not be another prolonged wait of 16 years for a follow-up to Songs of a Lost World. In the meantime, Mixes of a Lost World continues to amplify the excitement surrounding the band’s resurgence.
