The highly anticipated global jury lineup for this year’s Venice Film Festival has officially been announced, creating buzz in the film community.
Joining the previously revealed competition president, Alexander Payne, is an impressive roster of directors and filmmakers. This includes the Oscar-nominated Brazilian actress and writer Fernanda Torres known for her work in “I’m Still Here,” the renowned Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof recognized for his film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” and the Palme d’Or-winning Romanian director, writer, and producer Cristian Mungiu, famous for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.” Additionally, French director Stéphane Brizé with “Out of Season,” Italian director Maura Delpero of “Vermiglio,” and Chinese actor and producer Zhao Tao from “Stuck by the Tides” will also be part of this prestigious jury.
The competition jury will not only award the coveted Golden Lion for best film but will also be responsible for presenting several other prestigious accolades. These include the Silver Lion grand jury prize, Silver Lion for best director, Coppa Volpi for best actress, Coppa Volpi for best actor, a special jury prize, an award for best screenplay, and the Marcello Mastroianni Award aimed at recognizing new young actors or actresses, showcasing the festival’s commitment to honoring diverse talent.
In a notable addition, the Palme d’Or-winning French director Julia Ducournau, celebrated for her acclaimed film “Titan,” will preside over the Horizons (Orizzonti) section, which is dedicated to showcasing innovative and avant-garde cinematic works that push boundaries and challenge traditional storytelling.
The jury for the Horizons section will also feature a diverse array of talent including Italian director and video artist Yuri Ancarani known for “The Challenge” and “Atlantide,” Argentine film critic Fernando Enrique Juan Lima, Australian director Shannon Murphy famed for “Babyteeth,” and American artist and filmmaker RaMell Ross recognized for his work on “Nickel Boys.” This jury’s composition reflects a rich tapestry of voices from various backgrounds and cultures.
Moreover, Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells, acclaimed for her film “Aftersun,” will lead the jury for the Luigi de Laurentiis Award for best first work across all sections of the Venice Festival, a recognition that comes with a significant prize of $100,000 aimed at fostering emerging talent within the industry.
Joining Wells on the Venice jury for the best first work category are French-Tunisian director and producer Erige Sehiri of “Promised Sky,” who is also a founding member of the Rawiyat – Sisters in Film collective that champions female Arab filmmakers, along with the accomplished Italian director Silvio Soldini, adding further depth and perspective to the judging panel.
The prestigious 82nd edition of the Venice Film Festival is set to take place from August 27 to September 6, promising a captivating showcase of cinematic achievements. The full lineup of films and participants will be revealed on July 22, generating excitement among film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
