A significant amount of time has passed since the Venom narrative spotlight shone on Eugene “Flash” Thompson, who was once the host of the legendary symbiote. This often-overlooked war hero continues to make waves as the all-white Anti-Venom; however, the latest symbiote costume that Flash has donned has quickly emerged as one of the most impressive designs ever created. So, what is prompting Marvel to phase this remarkable costume out so soon?
The extraordinarily advanced symbiote costume makes its official debut in All-New Venom #9, crafted by the talented team of Al Ewing, Carlos Gomez, and Frank D’Armata. As Venom and his son Sleeper strive to break free from captivity, their escape plan encounters an obstacle when Toxin, Carnage’s symbiote offspring, finds itself too weak to move independently. Just when they need a host, Flash Thompson arrives just in time to save the day.
In a remarkable display of character development, Flash Thompson subdues his inherent Anti-Venom nature, known for being instantly lethal to any living symbiote. By merging with Toxin, he showcases not only his extensive experience but also a strong moral compass, enabling him to assist Toxin in its quest for freedom. This act brings forth one of the most striking new suits within the Spider-Man, Venom, and symbiote universe in recent memory.
Discover Why the New Toxin Design Stands Out as the Best Symbiote Suit in Years
Regrettably, Marvel Comics has already announced that this new version of Toxin, along with Flash Thompson’s role as a symbiote character, is not intended for the long haul, despite the excitement surrounding it. While this iteration shines as one of the most visually stunning characters to join the symbiote ranks in years, it has been deemed a “one-off” creation.
Marvel Editor Jordan D. White elaborates on this situation during an interview with AIPT, acknowledging the understandable excitement but revealing that the character is already being set up for a brief appearance, essentially writing it off as a one-and-done standout.
The forthcoming issue of All-New Venom showcases Toxin bonding with Flash Thompson. Do you believe this will significantly shape Flash’s identity in future narratives, or is this merely a temporary joining?
Jordan D. White: Well—Flash has Anti-Venom coursing through his veins, so he cannot bond with Toxin long-term. It’s a one-off for now. But that is an incredible look when he does it, isn’t it?
Given the challenges associated with creating an eye-catching superhero suit design, particularly within the Spider-Man universe, which is already saturated with a plethora of variants, the decision to dismiss this new look is bound to attract scrutiny. With considerable interest surrounding Flash Thompson and a costume that appears tailor-made for a bold new direction, it’s impossible not to view this as a lost opportunity.
