Andrew Garfield has officially committed to star in Luca Guadagnino’s exciting new film Artificial, just a month after reports surfaced about his initial discussions regarding this intriguing project. Moreover, Deadline has disclosed that Cooper Koch, who gained significant attention for his portrayal of Erik Menendez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, has also been added to the cast lineup. Additionally, Yura Borisov from Anora will also feature prominently in this film, which is characterized as a “comedic drama that delves into the realm of artificial intelligence.” This unique blend of humor and critical commentary is sure to attract a diverse audience.

The narrative revolves around the chaotic events at artificial intelligence firm OpenAI during the tumultuous year of 2023, particularly focusing on the controversial firing and subsequent rehiring of CEO Sam Altman within just a few days. It is widely speculated that Garfield will take on the pivotal role of Altman, while Borisov is expected to portray Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of OpenAI who was instrumental in the movement to expel Altman from the company. While there has been no official announcement regarding Koch’s character, there are ongoing discussions about Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) potentially playing the role of Mira Murati, the chief technology officer.

The screenplay for this ambitious project was crafted by Simon Rich, known for his work on Miracle Workers. In addition to writing, Rich will also serve as a producer alongside David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford from Heyday Films, as well as Jennifer Fox. Initially, Guadagnino was scheduled to helm Sgt. Rock for DC Studios this summer, but due to unforeseen delays, the project was postponed. Consequently, the director swiftly shifted his focus to Artificial. There remains a possibility that Guadagnino could return to Sgt. Rock in the future. Although no specific reasons for the delay have been disclosed, insiders suggest that scheduling conflicts, particularly related to outdoor filming plans, were a significant factor. Currently, production for Artificial is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2026. Additionally, there are concerns regarding Guadagnino’s experience with large-scale action sequences, which may have influenced the decision.

On the other hand, Garfield’s upcoming project also happens to be another collaboration with Guadagnino. He stars alongside Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri in the thrilling film After the Hunt. The narrative follows a college professor (played by Roberts) who faces a critical juncture in her life when a star pupil brings forth an accusation against one of her colleagues, while a dark secret from her past threatens to surface.
