Artist Sarah Atwa: An Insightful Interview on Her Awesome Art

For many years, Awesome Art has passionately focused on two essential elements: showcasing extraordinary art and highlighting the talented artists who create it. With this vision in mind, we decided to dedicate the first week of every month to further spotlight these remarkable artists. Welcome to “Awesome Artist Interviews,” where we delve into the life and work of one featured artist each month. This initiative aims to elevate the exposure of both emerging and established talents in the art world. By sharing their stories, inspirations, and creative processes, we hope to broaden the audience’s appreciation for their unique contributions to the art community. Meet Sarah Atwa, a digital artist and graphic designer based in Giza, Egypt—yes, the iconic pyramids are literally in her backyard, adding an inspiring backdrop to her creative journey, alongside her cat, Sukkar, who plays a crucial role in her artistic direction. Sarah was born and raised in Giza, where she graduated from the Faculty of Arts, specializing in Oriental Languages and Literature at Cairo University. Although she did not follow a traditional academic path in the arts, her passion for creativity has been a constant driving force throughout her life.

What initially began as a mere hobby transformed into a dedicated career path for Sarah in 2013 when she ventured into the world of graphic design. Through self-teaching, she mastered the art of digital painting, integrating illustration into her creative repertoire. Since 2019, Sarah has been producing captivating posters and participated in the inaugural Poster Posse Protege Programme, which significantly bolstered her confidence and creative abilities. She has engaged in various events and exhibitions, including AMP’s 30X30 and Terror Twos Vol 1 & 2. Despite being relatively new to the poster scene, Sarah has established collaborative relationships with independent studios and publishers, such as Tandem Pictures and Printed in Blood. Most recently, she launched a striking DC print with Moor Art Gallery and Sideshow Collectibles.

JOBLO: Can you share what inspired you to start your journey as an artist?
SARAH:
Absolutely! As a child, I was always drawn to painting, using it as my favorite form of play. It was a therapeutic outlet that kept me engaged and focused. However, the true spark ignited when I watched Daredevil on television at the age of twelve, which opened my eyes to the world of comic books and the rich visual storytelling they offer.

Who were some of the artists that inspired you during your childhood?
Watching Daredevil introduced me to the fascinating world of comic book art. Back then, I had limited access to the internet, but I quickly became enamored with the stunning cover art and decided to specialize in creating covers and posters. The works of artists like Alex Maleev on Daredevil, David Mack, Jim Lee on Batman, and Alex Ross left a lasting impression on me and significantly influenced my artistic style.

Which contemporary artists do you admire and follow on social media?
Instagram is a treasure trove of incredible talent. Some contemporary artists I am particularly fond of include Lucas Tetrault, Chris Koehler, Courtney Autumn Martin, Kevin Bravo, Cheryl Savala, Cherie Chapman, Eileen Steinbach (also known as SG Posters), Danny Schlitz, Phill Shelly, Liza Shmuska, Hannah Gillingham, Haley Turnbull, Chris Barnes (aka Brutal Posters), Nuno Sarnadas (aka Dark Design), Shimhaq, Dakota Randall, Bryan Johnson, Ryan Shumate, Ryan Button, Jorge Teles, Leah Kellaway, Samar AlKaabi, Orlando Arocena, and Sharon Burton. These are just a few of the artists whose work I closely follow and admire.

What advice would you offer to aspiring artists in today’s digital landscape?
One crucial piece of advice is to recognize that taking breaks is an essential part of the creative process. Prioritizing your mental health is vital, as constant comparison to others can be detrimental to an artist’s growth and confidence. Remember, luck often favors those who put in the hard work. There’s much more to artistry than just creating and refining your artwork; persistence and resilience are equally important.
