Avengers-style finale considered by The Conjuring creators

The Conjuring franchise has achieved remarkable success for Warner Bros., but the iconic duo of Ed Warren (portrayed by Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (played by Vera Farmiga) is set to embark on their final journey in The Conjuring: Last Rites. As this film is poised to be the last appearance of the Warrens, Peter Safran, the producer of The Conjuring, shared with Entertainment Weekly that they had “toyed with the idea” of crafting a grand finale, akin to an Avengers-style showdown, featuring every demon they have battled throughout the series.

During the development of this movie, we referred to it as Conjuring: Endgame because it represents the culmination of an incredible story that audiences have followed closely,” Safran explained. “While I’m not claiming that our film mirrors the Avengers: Endgame series, there was a unique feeling about building an audience through this storytelling approach, centered around Ed and Lorraine Warren. Knowing that Last Rites would serve as the final installment motivated us to invest a significant amount of effort into ensuring it delivers an incredibly fulfilling and emotionally resonant experience.

Michael Chaves, who has previously directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II, and is at the helm of the upcoming Last Rites, remarked, “Throughout the development process, we explored numerous ideas: ‘How grand can we make this?’ ‘How epic can we go?’ ‘Will this be the defining moment where all the demons confront them?’ Although we played with these concepts for a short time, we ultimately shifted our focus. I firmly believed that the most impactful and emotional narrative we could create would be the one that feels the most personal.

Despite the fact that The Conjuring: Last Rites will not feature an Avengers-style clash, Safran hinted at the return of some beloved characters. “Without revealing any spoilers, we seized the opportunity to potentially reintroduce some fan favorites,” Safran stated. “Viewers can enjoy this movie without having seen prior Conjuring films and still have a completely satisfying experience. However, for dedicated Conjuring fans, there are numerous elements that may resonate more deeply, providing additional layers of enjoyment that casual viewers might miss.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is set against the backdrop of 1986 and follows Ed and Lorraine as they emerge from retirement to investigate the chilling haunting of the Smurl family. The highly anticipated trailer will be unveiled tomorrow, so stay tuned for that. The film is scheduled for its theatrical release on September 5th, and there are already discussions regarding Phase 2 of the franchise.
