Aviation Thriller Starring Glen Powell Soars on Streaming Charts

In recent years, few celebrities have seen a meteoric rise in popularity quite like Glen Powell, with much of his acclaim stemming from his captivating performance in Top Gun: Maverick. This blockbuster film, featuring Tom Cruise, soared past the $1 billion mark at the global box office, showcasing Powell in the role of the witty and sharp-tongued Hangman. Additionally, Powell made headlines later in 2022 with his role in the aviation-themed thriller Devotion. Initially, the film struggled at the box office, grossing only $21 million against a hefty $90 million budget, but it found new life on the streaming platform Tubi. As of now, Devotion has captured a spot in the top 10 on Tubi’s charts, illustrating its newfound success. The film has earned a “certified fresh” rating of 81% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive “verified hot” 92% from audiences on the Popcornmeter.

Joining Glen Powell in the cast of Devotion is the former MCU star Jonathan Majors. Majors was poised to take on the significant role of Kang the Conqueror within the Multiverse Saga, first appearing in Loki Season 1 and later as the main antagonist in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, in late 2023, Jonathan Majors faced serious legal troubles that led to his dismissal from Marvel Studios after being convicted on two counts of misdemeanor assault and harassment. With speculation surrounding a recast of Majors’ role as Kang in the upcoming Avengers films, a significant announcement came during the San Diego Comic-Con. Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel, revealed that the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty would be rebranded as Avengers: Doomsday, with Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., set to take over as the next major villain, effectively sidelining Kang.
