In this exciting episode of Gear Factor, we feature the talented guitarist of Three Days Grace, Barry Stock. He shares some of his all-time favorite riffs that inspired him during his childhood, along with his latest contributions to the band’s new music from the album Alienation.
Discover Barry Stock’s Musical Roots and Influences
“Growing up with three older brothers, I was immersed in a vast array of ’70s rock music, and I think the very first track that truly resonated with me was ‘Stranglehold’ by Ted Nugent,” Stock recounts with nostalgia.
Another significant influence from his youth was the early work of AC/DC. “I was a massive fan of Bon Scott,” he reflects. “Although I can’t recall every single song, what I loved about that band was their incredibly catchy riffs that were simple enough to learn quickly.” This accessibility made it easier for young aspiring guitarists like him to connect with the music.
“As a budding guitarist, it was incredibly rewarding to latch onto these memorable riffs that not only inspired me but also fueled my desire to learn how to play rock guitar,” Stock elaborates. He emphasizes that his learning journey was informal; he never took formal guitar lessons but instead honed his skills by surrounding himself with more experienced musicians.
Stock developed his abilities by collaborating with friends who were passionate about iconic bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. He even looked up to legendary shredder Paul Gilbert during his twenties. While his focus has shifted to creating catchy riffs today, he recalls spending countless hours practicing scales and string skipping techniques, which laid the foundation for his musical prowess.
How Black Sabbath Influenced the Creation of “Riot”
Stock’s introduction to the legendary band Black Sabbath came through his older brothers, and he believes that it was their iconic self-titled song that made the biggest impact on him early on.
“Interestingly, when I composed the riff for ‘Riot’, I found myself channeling the essence of ‘Black Sabbath’. The structural elements of the bridge in ‘Black Sabbath’ influenced my approach,” the guitarist reveals with enthusiasm, showcasing the profound impact of heavy metal on his songwriting process.
Creating Memorable Riffs During the Adam Gontier Reunion Era
“Mayday” stands out as the lead single from Alienation, marking a significant milestone for Three Days Grace as it is the first album featuring the return of vocalist Adam Gontier.
This track not only offers fans a glimpse of fresh music but also highlights the rekindled chemistry within the band. “When we started collaborating last year, we gathered at my studio, and ‘Mayday’ was among the first songs we crafted in this new chapter with Adam back in the fold,” Stock explains, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that drives their creative process.
