This weekend is a thrilling time for action movie enthusiasts! Not only is Ryan Coogler’s intense vampire horror/action film Sinners still captivating audiences in packed theaters, but movie lovers are also treated to two brand-new yet delightfully nostalgic run-and-gun action films this weekend—one available for streaming and the other screening in theaters. So, whether you decide to enjoy a cinematic experience at the theater or opt for the comfort of home viewing, you’re guaranteed a spectacularly entertaining time filled with high-octane excitement.
However, it’s important to note that these two films represent different styles within the action genre. The Accountant 2, which is a sequel, pays homage to the classic American action movies from the 80s and 90s. It embodies the spirit of films that a star like Mel Gibson would have starred in during his prime, under the direction of someone like Richard Donner. In stark contrast, Havoc is deeply rooted in the Hong Kong action style from the same era, closely resembling the iconic films made by John Woo featuring Chow Yun-Fat. While Havoc boasts a staggering body count in the hundreds, The Accountant 2 opts for a more grounded approach, though I would wager that both Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal each eliminate at least a dozen adversaries in the climactic showdown.
Between the two, my personal favorite is The Accountant 2. Although I hold Gareth Evans in high regard as an exceptional action director, I believe that his somewhat cheesy script and dialogue detract from what could have been an otherwise brilliantly executed piece of action filmmaking. In contrast, the dialogue and character development in The Accountant 2 stand out as a highlight, enhancing the overall experience. But I’m curious to hear your opinions! Share your thoughts in the comments section regarding both of this week’s new action films, and while you’re at it, participate in the poll below to let us know which film you think reigns supreme. With Thunderbolts on the horizon and Sinners currently in theaters, it seems we won’t be short on big-screen action anytime soon!
