Many heavy metal acts have achieved remarkable success and elevated the genre over the past fifty years, but only the most significant and daring innovators can claim the title of the “Big 4” of heavy metal.
Rock bands began laying the groundwork for heavy metal in the 1960s. Some fans and scholars consider Blue Cheer’s groundbreaking 1968 debut album Vincebus Eruptum to be the genesis of the genre. Later that same year, the Beatles showcased their intense vocals and distorted guitar sounds in the proto-metal anthem “Helter Skelter.” Additionally, Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild,” with its lyric about “heavy metal thunder,” introduced the term into popular culture.
These artists — along with foundational hard rock giants like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple — established the groundwork for heavy metal. However, the genre would not fully develop until the dawn of the next decade.
