The Friend has already garnered positive reviews following its debut at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival last year, further enhancing its reputation at TIFF. The buzz surrounding the film grew significantly, leading many to believe it would receive a notable release. After Bleecker Street secured the distribution rights, the film’s journey towards its April release became more certain. Initially flying under the radar, the release of the first trailer has reignited interest just as the premiere approaches.

According to the official synopsis provided by Bleecker Street, The Friend is adapted from the bestselling novel. The story follows Iris (played by Naomi Watts), whose seemingly idyllic life in New York City is turned upside down when her mentor and close friend, Walter (played by Bill Murray), leaves her his beloved Great Dane, Apollo. The dog, while regal, presents numerous challenges and serves as a constant reminder of Walter. As Iris forges a bond with Apollo, she begins to confront her grief, reflect on her lost friendship, and explore her own creative aspirations, making for a deeply moving narrative.

In addition to the lead performances, The Friend boasts a talented supporting cast that includes Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Ann Dowd, Noma Dumezweni, Felix Solis, Owen Teague, and more. The film is directed by the esteemed duo, Scott McGehee and David Siegel, who have been collaborating for over three decades. Their inaugural film, Suture, was released more than 30 years ago, and their most recent project, Montana Story, also received distribution from Bleecker Street. While both are excellent, I highly recommend checking out their 2012 film, What Maisie Knew, for a deeper appreciation of their craftsmanship.

The Friend marks a reunion for Watts and Murray, who last collaborated a decade ago in St. Vincent, directed by Theodore Melfi. This new film will explore a different dynamic between the two actors, particularly given the emotional themes inherent in the plot. Notably, The Friend is one of three films Murray has lined up for this year, alongside Riff Raff and The Phoenician Scheme directed by Wes Anderson.

Mark your calendars as The Friend is set to hit theaters on April 4th, following a special engagement in New York City starting on March 21st. This film promises to be a captivating exploration of friendship and loss, and it is one you won?t want to miss!
