Billy Idol continues to captivate audiences, consistently selling out amphitheaters nearly 50 years into his illustrious career. However, in the initial stages of his musical journey, he found himself performing in an unexpected yet vibrant setting: gay clubs. These venues played a crucial role in shaping the punk scene, providing a platform for artists and fans alike to connect.

During a recent episode of the Turned Out a Punk podcast, Idol shared nostalgic reflections on his formative performances in these unique venues. “A lot of the clubs that were putting on punk shows were usually gay clubs,” he remarked, emphasizing the inclusive atmosphere they fostered. “We even did a tour, the White Wedding tour, which was like that. We were playing a lot of these little clubs, which were gay clubs that on Tuesday nights, they went punk.”

Idol elaborated on the connection between the punk movement and the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting that it wasn’t merely about the presence of gay fans in punk music, but rather a shared experience of being marginalized. Both groups found solace in music, creating an environment that embraced diversity and welcomed all individuals, regardless of their background. This sense of belonging was palpable during performances.

“It was very embracing,” Idol fondly recalled. “People who didn’t feel like they fit in for various reasons—whether it was related to gender identity, cross-dressing, or simply feeling unseen—found a home in these spaces. This resonates with what people say today about not feeling visible. We certainly felt that way.”

Reflecting on his experiences in England, Idol described the grim outlook they faced, saying, “We were being told that we didn’t have a future; there was no future for us.” This harsh reality led him and others to unite with fellow outcasts, creating a strong community. They came together from various backgrounds—different genders, political beliefs, and personal struggles—each with their own reasons for feeling like outsiders.

As Idol looks ahead to his upcoming 2025 shows, it’s evident that his venues will be significantly larger than those early club days. The iconic “Rebel Yell” singer is set to embark on a nationwide tour alongside Joan Jett, performing in expansive arenas and amphitheaters across the USA, showcasing his enduring appeal and the evolution of his career.
