Legendary musician Billy Joel has officially suspended his entire touring schedule following a diagnosis of Normal pressure hydrocephalus. Medical professionals indicate that his live performances have intensified his condition, resulting in significant challenges related to hearing, vision, and balance. This alarming diagnosis has prompted Joel to prioritize his health above all else.
The last performance by Joel took place on February 22 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Shortly after this event, he disclosed that he would take an extended hiatus from touring due to a serious medical condition that necessitated both surgery and physical therapy. His fans were understandably concerned about his well-being.
The recently canceled concerts were scheduled from late April through early July. In a heartfelt statement, Joel expressed, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” and conveyed his gratitude for their understanding during this challenging time.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. This disorder is frequently misdiagnosed as other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, as stated by the Alzheimer’s Association. Alarmingly, fewer than 20 percent of individuals suffering from this condition receive an accurate diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of awareness and education regarding this medical issue.
At 76 years old, Joel is currently “undergoing targeted physical therapy and has been advised to abstain from performing during this recovery phase,” according to the official announcement. He expressed immense gratitude for the exceptional care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health and well-being during this critical time.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is relatively uncommon, affecting only 0.2 percent of individuals in their 70s. Typically, those affected undergo a surgical procedure in which a shunt is implanted to facilitate the removal of excess cerebrospinal fluid, significantly improving their quality of life.
If you have purchased tickets for the canceled shows, Joel’s announcement assures fans that “you do not need to take any action to receive your refund. It will be automatically processed back to the original payment method used for the transaction,” providing peace of mind amid the cancellation.
