Black And White Remake Divides Pokémon Fans

The Pokémon franchise has experienced numerous ups and downs over the years, with fans having their own personal favorites and releases that didn’t resonate well. Pokémon Black and White are among the most divisive titles, yet their overall reputations have improved significantly over time.

Released back in 2010, Pokémon Black and White certainly had its strengths, breaking the record for the most new Pokémon introduced to the franchise at once, with 156. It also introduced features like seasonal cycles and animated sprites, but it wasn’t all positive feedback.

Many players felt the games lacked innovation, and some designs for the vast number of new Pokémon were considered somewhat underwhelming. Therefore, it’s somewhat surprising that so many fans have called for remakes to bring the Black and White formula into 2026, but interest continues to grow nonetheless.

Game Freak Hasn’t Announced A Gen 5 Remake Yet

The first important point is that developer Game Freak has yet to confirm whether they are working on a remake of Pokémon Black and White, despite fans advocating for it from all sides. In even more disappointing news, the infamous Teraleak seemingly doesn’t contain any reference to one either.

This suggests that there likely isn’t a remake in development at this time, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future, especially if community demand continues to rise at the current pace.

Fans Have Mixed Reactions To Gen 5

A user on Reddit asked fans why there have been so many recent requests for Black and White remakes, leading to a very mixed response regarding the idea.

“The people who grew up with Gen 5 (like you) are now maturing and care more about what the series represents. Naturally, they want it to reflect their childhood experiences, and with the tradition of remaking older games (FRLG, HGSS, ORAS, BDSP), it makes sense for Black and White to receive a remake soon,” one comment stated.

“Over time, people have come to appreciate BW. With over 15 years since its release, it’s reasonable to expect a remake in the latest generation,” another added.

A third user expressed a desire for something less ambitious, stating, “I would prefer a Remaster rather than a remake. Something akin to the recent Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. Same game, a few quality-of-life improvements, and incorporate new mechanics (like Fairy Type). But please don’t alter the best sprites that Pokémon has ever produced!”

No matter what Game Freak decides moving forward, it’s evident that there is significant demand for Pokémon Black and White to return in some capacity. Here’s hoping they heed the audience’s wishes and embark on what would be an exciting project soon.
