In the interview, Selena revealed that she utilizes dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). According to the Cleveland Clinic, DBT is a form of talk therapy that has been “specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely.”
Selena mentioned that it assists her in “peeling away layers” of issues that trouble her.
“I got stung by a person saying I was fat. Why is that [emotion] coming up?” Selena explained during the interview as an example of something she has worked on in therapy. “I’ve dealt with a lot of weight issues in my life, and that’s something I’m very sensitive to.”
Selena stated that through DBT, she has been able to uncover the root of why this issue affects her so deeply. She noted, “Oh, now I understand, that’s stemming from that one time when I was going through some medical stuff and I had gained weight…”
Selena was diagnosed with lupus in 2013, which resulted in chronic pain, dexterity issues, chemotherapy, and a kidney transplant.
