Warner Bros. is officially advancing with the highly anticipated remake of The Bodyguard, a beloved romantic thriller from the early 1990s that originally showcased the incredible talents of Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston.

According to a report by Deadline, Warner Bros. is progressing with a modern retelling of The Bodyguard, the iconic 1992 romantic thriller that captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. The studio has enlisted Sam Wrench, known for his work on Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, to take the helm as director, with a screenplay crafted by Jonathan A. Abrams, who is recognized for his writing in Juror No. 2.
The original film showcased Costner in the role of Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard who protects Rachel Marron (played by Whitney Houston</b), a celebrated actress and music icon. The film expertly combined elements of drama, suspense, and romance while exploring the intense relationship between the bodyguard and his client. With a menacing stalker threatening Marron’s safety, the storyline kept viewers on the edge of their seats. The accompanying soundtrack achieved monumental success, becoming the best-selling album of all time, featuring unforgettable tracks such as I Will Always Love You, I’m Every Woman, Queen of the Night, Run to You, and I Have Nothing.
The Bodyguard was met with substantial box office success upon its release, leading to discussions about a potential sequel starring Costner alongside Princess Diana. Sadly, the project was shelved following her tragic passing, despite a first draft being completed just days prior to the incident.
This marks not the first attempt by Warner Bros. to breathe new life into The Bodyguard. In 2021, the studio brought on Matthew López, a Tony-nominated playwright acclaimed for The Inheritance, to pen a fresh reimagining of the classic film. López shared his vision with Variety, stating, “This new take will not center around a well-established star like Whitney Houston’s character; instead, it focuses on a young Latina performer who has just achieved fame. The narrative explores the dramatic changes in her life as she becomes an overnight sensation, highlighting the urgent need for protection in today’s fast-paced world. I aimed to seize this opportunity to prominently showcase Latinx faces on-screen and ensure their stories are told in a substantial manner.”
Warner Bros. has an array of exciting projects based on its classic films currently in development. These include a revival of The Matrix, spearheaded by writer/director Drew Goddard, a highly anticipated sequel to Practical Magic featuring returning stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, and new cinematic ventures related to Gremlins, The Goonies, and Beetlejuice 3.
