This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has become the first new release to properly challenge Avatar: Fire and Ash. Fire and Ash, which debuted at No. 1 on December 19, is the third installment in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise, the first two installments of which are the first and third highest-grossing movies of all time worldwide.

The horror sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which is the fourth installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, was directed by Candyman‘s Nia DaCosta and stars Alfie Williams, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Chi Lewis-Parry. It comes just seven months after 2025’s 28 Years Later, which was helmed by returning director Danny Boyle.

Per The Numbers, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple earned $2.1 million at the domestic box office on Thursday during its pre-Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend preview screenings. This has allowed it to become the first movie to topple Avatar: Fire and Ash (which grossed $1.48 million on Thursday) from No. 1 on the daily domestic chart.

Fire and Ash held its streak at No. 1 for 27 full days, spanning from its debut on December 19 through Wednesday, January 15. Fittingly, The Bone Temple has prevented the movie from extending that streak to 28 days.
