Borderlands 4: How to Defeat Idolator Sol

The looter shooter madness continues with Borderlands 4. On the journey to stop the Timekeeper and recruit members to the Crimson Resistance, one of the earliest roadblocks most players will face is with Idolator Sol, the game’s first bolt-keeper. Sol is a required main story boss, roughly six to seven hours into the main campaign, and he can be a headache for some players.

Borderlands 4‘s more grounded approach to its storytelling and characters helps make Sol intimidating, in terms of both story and gameplay. I have tackled the boss during my Borderlands 4 preview and also a few more times for loot runs, so here is everything you need to know to defeat Idolator Sol.

Idolator Sol Boss Guide in Borderlands 4

A Barrage Of Lasers, Spears, & More

Idolator Sol has three life bars, and he progressively gets more aggressive throughout the fight. He will also consistently spawn additional enemies for assistance, but those can also be shot to activate Second Wind if you happen to go down while playing single-player. This fight highlights Borderlands 4‘s updated movement mechanics and the new grapple hook.

Idolator Sol has a defensive barrier that will prevent you from doing any damage until it’s removed. To take down the barrier, you have to wait until Sol performs an attack that rains spears from the sky. All the spears that hit the ground will be red except for one green one. You will need to use the grapple hook to grab the green one and toss it at Sol to remove his barrier.

After the barrier is down, you can unleash your arsenal of weapons on him. Since Borderlands 4 technically has over a billion guns and randomized drops, there are quite a few ways to approach this fight. Grenades that bounce in place are effective because Sol is quite large. The arena is fairly small, so shotguns are useful too.

Stay On The Move

The best strategy in this fight is to constantly be on the move. With Sol’s arena-filling attacks combined with an onslaught of attacks from random enemies, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. When he fires his large laser beam, dash to the left or right and keep moving, then dash again to avoid damage.

As Sol’s health decreases, he’ll start using a new attack that will divide the arena into segments and rain down energy blasts that can quickly deplete your shield. One area in the arena will be safe during this extended attack, indicated by a segment that is brighter than the rest. Stay there until the wave ends, then move to the next “safe” part and continue this pattern until he stops attacking.

When he reaches his final life bar, Sol will become more aggressive and attack more frequently. Keep an eye on your health, stay mobile, remove his barrier with more spears as it regenerates, and he should go down fairly easily. Once he’s defeated, he will drop a considerable amount of loot and his bolt, allowing you to continue the Borderlands 4 main story.
