Brand New Day Insights and More

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episodes 2-3

Street-level stories in the MCU are thriving right now, especially with Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Not only has Mayor Wilson Fisk initiated a full-scale war on vigilantes in New York, but the new season is also anticipated to see the return of major heroes from Marvel’s Netflix era, like Jessica Jones. However, significant changes are being hinted at for New York’s future in the MCU ahead of projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

As observed in the initial episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Mayor Fisk’s war on vigilantes has been heightening tensions across the city, and his administration may not be as cohesive as it appears on the surface.

Based on what we already know about New York’s status, thanks to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and upcoming seasons of Daredevil: Born Again, it seems a major shift in the status quo has been hinted at in the latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

A Key Scene In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 3 Teases New York’s Next Mayor

Mayor Fisk in Daredevil Born Again Season 2

One of the biggest clues comes during a governor’s dinner in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 3. It’s a quieter scene compared to the new episode’s ending (which features one of the best MCU television action sequences ever). However, a key reference carries significant implications for the future.

During the dinner, Dr. Heather Glenn is seated next to Fisk’s right-hand man and loyal enforcer, Buck Cashman. Discussing various members of Fisk’s administration as if they were a royal court, Buck turns his attention to Sheila, Fisk’s former campaign manager turned political advisor.

Matt Murdock was blinded as a child by radioactive material that fell from a truck. While he lost his sight, the accident gave him something extraordinary in return. What did the radioactive exposure give Matt?

✓ Correct! The radioactive chemicals that blinded young Matt Murdock simultaneously supercharged his remaining senses to extraordinary levels and gave him a radar-like spatial awareness. He can “see” the world around him through sound, smell, touch, and taste with superhuman precision — making him one of Marvel’s most unique heroes.

✗ Even Daredevil’s radar sense couldn’t find the right answer there! The answer is superhuman radar-like senses. The radioactive accident didn’t give Matt strength, telepathy, or X-ray vision — it heightened all his remaining senses to superhuman levels and granted him a radar sense that lets him perceive the world around him in all directions.

Daredevil’s greatest enemy is a massive, calculating crime lord who controls most of the criminal underworld in New York City. This villain is known by his real name and his title. Who is he?

Surprisingly, Buck refers to Sheila as potentially being “Iago with a sharpened blade”, a reference to Shakespeare’s Othello and the character of Iago being one of the most well-recognized traitors in literature. This confirms that Buck has his suspicions about Sheila’s loyalty, as she has expressed the most doubt about Fisk’s actions despite remaining faithful (thus far).

Nevertheless, it now seems even more likely that Sheila will end up betraying Mayor Fisk by the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, especially considering what we already know about her character’s future in the MCU.

Everything We Know About New York In The MCU’s Future

Spider-Man Receives Key To The City in Spider-Man Brand New Day Trailer

The idea of Fisk being replaced as New York’s mayor has already been hinted at for the MCU’s future. After all, the first footage from Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s trailer features none other than Sheila Rivera giving Spider-Man the key to the city. No way would that happen under Mayor Fisk’s administration.

Combined with this new line about Sheila being Iago, it does seem very likely that she will eventually replace Wilson Fisk as New York’s mayor by the season’s end and will likely defy him in some way that results in Kingpin losing his political power.

That said, we should also consider the original comics and recent set photos for season three of Daredevil: Born Again. It was recently confirmed that Mike Colter’s Luke Cage will be returning to the MCU in the next season alongside Finn Jones’ Iron Fist, much like Jessica Jones’ return this season. Furthermore, Cage is also wearing what very much looks like the mayoral suit he wears after replacing Fisk on the page.

Luke Cage being elected mayor of New York City.

Perhaps the same will happen in the MCU with Sheila serving as New York’s interim mayor? It certainly feels possible. However it all plays out, it feels very likely that Wilson Fisk’s days as New York’s mayor are very much numbered in the MCU.

New episodes of
