Brent Hinds Leaves Mastodon After 25 Years Together

Guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds, who co-founded the influential metal band Mastodon in Atlanta back in 2000, has officially announced his departure from the band after an impressive 25-year tenure. This surprising development marks a significant moment in the band’s history, as Hinds has played a pivotal role in shaping their unique sound and identity.

On Friday, March 7, the band took to social media to share this news, describing the decision to part ways as mutual and amicable. This statement highlights the respect and appreciation that both parties have for each other, signaling a positive transition as they move forward independently.

In a heartfelt message to fans, Mastodon expressed, “Friends and Fans, After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways,” reflecting on their shared journey. The band conveyed their pride in the music they have created together, emphasizing gratitude for their collective history. They also assured fans of their commitment to continue delivering exceptional performances, stating, “We are still very inspired and excited to show up for fans in this next chapter of Mastodon. As we move forward, all 2025 touring plans will remain intact. We look forward to seeing you on the road.”

The lineup of Mastodon, which included the steadfast combination of Hinds, bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor, had remained consistent since 2001. This stability contributed to the band’s distinctive sound and cohesiveness, making Friday’s announcement a notable change for both the band and its dedicated fanbase.

Mastodon has achieved remarkable success with nine albums charting on the Billboard 200, including three that reached the coveted top 10: The Hunter (2011), One More ‘Round the Sun (2014), and Emperor of Sand (2017). Notably, the latter two albums both secured the No. 1 spot on the Top Rock Albums chart. The band has also received six Grammy nominations, winning the award for Best Metal Performance for their track “Sultan’s Curse” in 2018, solidifying their influence in the heavy metal genre.

Looking ahead, Mastodon is scheduled to perform at the highly anticipated Tool Live in the Sand event this weekend in Punta Cana, Mexico. They will share the stage with renowned acts like Tool, Primus, Coheed and Cambria, and Eagles of Death Metal, among other hard-rock legends. This performance is part of a broader tour schedule that extends through August, ensuring fans will have the opportunity to experience their music live.
