‘Call the Midwife’ Star Hints at Uncertain Future in Series

The return of the nuns of Nonnatus House is just around the corner, with Season 15 of the acclaimed, long-running historical medical drama Call the Midwife set to debut across the pond on Sunday, January 11. Much has been discussed about the future of the series ahead of this next outing, including the release of reports suggesting that the show was coming to an end. Thankfully, these rumors were quickly dispelled by the BBC, and fans could get excited about what is shaping up to be a strong, expanding future for the franchise, which includes both a spin-off series and a feature-length project.

Ahead of Season 15’s return, fan-favorite Jenny Agutter, who plays Sister Julienne, has teased in an interview what the future might hold for Nonnatus House, and how the weight of new governmental measures might put its very existence in jeopardy. “It all looks as if they’ll have to fall in line with the NHS and what the council want of them,” Agutter said, adding, “That’s fine in itself but it’s actually a bigger question, which is that Sister Julienne sees the nuns as being missionaries in the East End, serving a community.” She continued:

“And she, as a nun, is very much aware of the fact that the first service they have is to God, a higher order than the council. The habit is very much to do with showing that they are a part of serving the community. So it’s not just a matter of identification, it’s a matter of knowing what one’s role is and what they’re meant to be doing and feeling that one’s no longer wanted. It’s a conundrum because if Nonnatus House goes, then a lot of the services that are a part of it go, too.”

‘Call the Midwife’ is Still a Firm Fan Favorite

To stay relevant after fourteen years on our screens is no easy feat, but to do so without a notable drop in quality is indicative of a production team and cast working at the top of their game. Sporting a near-perfect 95% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Call the Midwife is still staple viewing for millions, something illustrated in the recent Christmas specials. Reports suggest that 2025’s annual December 25 trip to Poplar peaked at just over 3 million viewers live across the pond, making it one of the biggest performers in the U.K. on the big day.

Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more updates on Call the Midwife and other British shows.
