Captain Planet TV Series in Development at Netflix

After an extensive period of development uncertainty, the live-action Captain Planet and the Planeteers project is finally gaining momentum. Recent reports from Deadline indicate that this beloved series is being creatively reimagined as a television series for Netflix. The project is a collaboration between Greg Berlanti‘s Berlanti Productions, Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way, and Warner Bros. Television, bringing together top industry talent to revive this iconic environmental franchise.

Originally created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner, Captain Planet and the Planeteers is an animated television series that focused on environmental themes and aired for an impressive six seasons during the 1990s. The storyline featured five young people from diverse backgrounds across the globe who possessed magical rings that granted them the ability to control the elements of nature. When united, they could summon Captain Planet, a superhero dedicated to combating environmental destruction and promoting eco-friendly practices, making the show a pioneer in raising awareness about ecological issues.

As previously mentioned, this project has been in the pipeline for quite some time. The last significant advancement occurred nearly a decade ago when Glen Powell and Jono Matt were selected to write the script. There were also expectations that Powell would take on the role of Captain Planet. Reports indicated that this screenplay would offer a subversive perspective, depicting a scenario “years after the original adventures, with Captain Planet portrayed as a washed-up hero who is in desperate need of the kids’ help more than they need him.” This unique take could offer a fresh lens on the character’s legacy and relevance.

Just two years ago, Glen Powell expressed enthusiasm for the project, asserting that it was still very much alive and that he was eager to portray the iconic hero. “I know DiCaprio is super passionate about it,” Powell stated. “I’m super passionate about it. I think it could be great…I want that one to work. I’d love to play that superhero.” However, Deadline’s recent report clarifies that Powell is no longer attached to the Netflix series, although Jono Matt remains involved as a producer, ensuring that the creative vision will still be carried forward.

Interestingly, we have experienced a glimpse of Captain Planet in live-action before. Don Cheadle portrayed a wildly unconventional version of Captain Planet in a series of comedic shorts on Funny or Die. In these shorts, when summoned by the Planeteers to address environmental crises, this rendition of Captain Planet quickly spiraled out of control, humorously turning individuals into trees and exclaiming, “The power is mine, bitches!” This portrayal, while not traditional, showcased the enduring cultural relevance of the character in modern media.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming live-action adaptation of Captain Planet as a Netflix TV series?
