Rock legend John Fogerty revealed that he once had the opportunity to repurchase the iconic guitar he played during the pinnacle of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s success. However, he declined the offer due to the painful memories associated with the instrument. This guitar had been a significant part of his journey, evoking a range of emotions tied to his past.
In a surprising turn of events, his wife and manager, Julie Fogerty, took matters into her own hands and purchased the guitar as a heartfelt Christmas gift. This thoughtful gesture initiated a profound healing process for John, ultimately leading him back to the world of music.
Fogerty utilized the Rickenbacker guitar, which features the hand-painted word “Acme,” for his upcoming album titled Legacy – The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years. This exciting 20-track album showcases meticulous recreations of CCR classics and is set for release in August, promising a nostalgic experience for fans.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Fogerty shared that he had parted ways with the guitar back in the ‘70s. Approximately two decades later, he was given the chance to buy it back for the hefty sum of $40,000. However, the guitar served as a reminder of the bitter legal disputes he faced with former bandmates and their record label, making it a painful memory.
Discover How John Fogerty’s Guitar Reconnection Sparked His Musical Revival
“I was hurt. I was damaged,” Fogerty recalled. “I started as a joyful kid immersed in music, but during the time of Creedence and shortly thereafter, that joy was lost.”
However, upon reconnecting with the guitar, Fogerty’s feelings began to shift positively, paving the way for his return to the stage. With the release of Legacy, he has taken yet another significant step in his musical journey.
“The aim was to reconnect and rediscover that joy in everything again,” he explained. “The person who couldn’t bear to even look at his own guitar in the ’90s or later could never have imagined this moment.”

In 2021, Fogerty introduced a new song titled “Weeping in the Promised Land,” yet he downplayed the prospects of releasing an album filled with original songs, despite earlier hints suggesting it might happen.
“Do I have a collection of songs written and recorded? No, I don’t,” he admitted. However, he expressed that receiving the American Music Honors the previous month, where Bruce Springsteen inducted him and Jackson Browne led a performance of the Eagles’ “Take It Easy,” served as a major source of inspiration.
“On the drive back to the hotel with my wife, I exclaimed, ‘I’m feeling like I’m 10 feet off the ground. I want to write songs and record them!’” Fogerty enthused.
Unveiling John Fogerty’s Motivations Behind the Creation of ‘Legacy’ Album
“Reaching the age of 80 grants you a unique key to the kingdom, allowing you to pursue whatever you desire,” he stated regarding Legacy. “I decided this is what I wanted to do – to give myself a precious gift.”
Fogerty articulated two additional motivations for creating the album: “Firstly, it’s highly unlikely that I will ever possess any share of the ownership of the original masters. This resonates with the Taylor Swift narrative. Secondly, I believe there’s an evident joy in this music that may not have been present in the original versions.”
