Charlie Hunnam, the actor who portrayed Ed Gein in Monster: The Ed Gein Story, shared that his girlfriend, Morgana McNelis, has set specific guidelines for him. The couple has been together since 2005. However, Charlie mentioned that he often arrives home “a bit of a shell after doing a role.” This does not sit well with his girlfriend, leading them to establish a routine to manage it.

Monster Season 3, featuring Charlie Hunnam, recently debuted on Netflix, highlighting Ed Gein’s story. Gein was convicted of murdering two women. Given the intensity of this role, Hunnam acknowledged that his girlfriend was supportive, but he had to adhere to one rule. He revealed:
“So, she said to me, probably about 10 years ago, ‘Here’s the rules of engagement: Go do your work. Be as selfish as you need to be, but then take some time, because when you get back, you better be ready to see me.’ Which is completely fair and really lovely” (via E! Online).
Hunnam stated that he followed the rule once more after filming Monster Season 3 and portraying a criminal. To decompress, he drove to Ed Gein’s grave and spent some time there. It was convenient since he was in Chicago at the time, and Gein was buried in Wisconsin.
Morgana fully supported this entire process and encouraged Hunnam to proceed with it. He said:
“My partner had incredible conviction that this was an important thing to do. She’s a great fan of the psychoanalysts, so she understands shadow work and the value of staring into the abyss and confronting the darkness much more than I do. So she was an amazing support to me, saying, ‘You just got to go do this thing, you got to enter the cave and face the dragon.’”
Hunnam further mentioned that he aimed to comprehend the “why” behind Ed Gein’s murders to fully embody his character.
