Cheeto Sells for Nearly $90,000 at Auction: Here’s Why

This unique Cheeto is valued at an astonishing amount of cheddar.

A remarkable Flamin’ Hot Cheeto, designed in the shape of Pokémon‘s iconic character Charizard, fetched a staggering $87,840 at auction on March 2 after an exciting competition that featured 60 bids. This event highlights the growing trend of collectible snacks, demonstrating that even food items can become valuable pieces of memorabilia.

This highly sought-after item, affectionately named “Cheetozard,” was auctioned through the renowned collectible marketplace Goldin, presented in a custom box designed like a Pokémon card that emphasizes its clever branding. The 3-inch spicy chip, which mirrors the fire-breathing dragon from the beloved Japanese franchise, started its bidding journey at a modest $250 on February 10, ultimately soaring to an impressive peak bid of $72,000.

However, the fortunate buyer ended up paying an additional $15,840 due to the auction house’s 22 percent “buyer’s premium” fee. Although Goldin has not disclosed the identity of the individual who successfully acquired this extraordinary piece of culinary art, they did reveal that it was “initially discovered and preserved sometime between 2018-2022 by 1st & Goal Collectibles.” This adds an interesting backstory to the journey of the Cheetozard.

Interestingly, the Georgia-based collectors behind this find shared a clip of the Cheeto on their Instagram account in April 2024, reminiscing, “We’ve had the Cheetozard for about 5 years now and we totally forgot we had it until cleaning out the safe! Loads of offers have come in.” This anecdote showcases the unexpected nature of collectible items and how they can resurface years later to captivate the interest of collectors and enthusiasts alike.
