Cherry’s Secrets and [SPOILER] Death Uncovered

Warning: This article includes MAJOR SPOILERS for The Girlfriend!

Prime Video’s The Girlfriend is a wildly Oedipal thriller that plunges towards a dramatic ending revealing Cherry’s secrets and one shocking death. The narrative centers around three main characters: Laura (Robin Wright), Cherry (Olivia Cooke), and Daniel (Laurie Davidson). Daniel, a wealthy cad, becomes a client at Cherry’s real estate company, hoping to meet her.

After Daniel and Cherry begin dating, she attempts to conceal her humble background. She leans into the deception about her upbringing when meeting Daniel’s parents. Unfortunately, Daniel’s mother, Laura, is possessive of her son, treating him more like a boyfriend than a son. Although she tries to be welcoming to Cherry, jealousy quickly arises, as depicted in The Girlfriend‘s trailer. Her jealousy drives her to uncover Cherry’s lies.

Following a rock-climbing accident that leaves Daniel hospitalized, Laura deceives Cherry by claiming her son has died. Furthermore, she lies to Daniel, convincing him that Cherry abandoned him due to his accident. When the truth comes to light, it leads to a dramatic conclusion where Laura and Cherry compete against each other in a battle of wits.

How Does Laura Die In The Girlfriend?

The dialogue in the cryptic first scene of The Girlfriend leads viewers to believe that Laura will kill Cherry by the end of the show. However, the finale reverses this expectation. Laura does intend to kill her son’s girlfriend. Initially, she attempts to stab Cherry and later tries to drown her. Ultimately, it is Laura who dies, not Cherry.

The intriguing part is that it does not happen at the hands of the anticipated individual. Instead, in true Oedipus Rex fashion, Daniel unknowingly kills one of his parents. In a twist from the fable, he ends up killing the mother he adores above all else. In a drugged stupor, Daniel stumbles into the basement to find Laura drowning Cherry.

Daniel’s protective instincts kick in, forcing him to choose between the two women. Rather than siding with his mother, he becomes her undoing. He separates them by pushing Laura underwater. While checking on Cherry, Daniel fails to realize that he has held Laura’s head underwater for too long, resulting in her death.

Ultimately, Laura’s death is tragic for several reasons. Daniel will have to bear the guilt of having murdered his mother, who engaged in emotional incest with him. He is also left with Cherry, whom he will likely come to resent. Additionally, regardless of whom Daniel had chosen, he would have been stuck with a manipulative and dangerous woman.

What Is Cherry’s Secret Past In The Girlfriend?

Olivia Cooke looks over her shoulder in The Girlfriend

Leading up to the conclusion of The Girlfriend, the show reveals that Cherry played a role in her father’s injury, which will be explored further in the next section. However, the most disturbing revelation occurs in the final moments of the show when Daniel discovers his mother’s phone and sees a video of Laura conversing with Cherry’s mother.

In the audio recording, Cherry’s mother mentions that the attack on Cherry’s dad was not an isolated incident. Instead, she discloses that Cherry did worse than “glassing her face” when dealing with children at school who took her toys and with the boy who stood her up at the college dance. It is implied that she might have killed him.

Finally, Cherry’s mother warns that Daniel needs to be cautious with Cherry because eventually she will find a way to “get rid of him” if he does not give her what she wants. This aligns with how she treats Laura—friendly until Laura stops accommodating her desires.

What Really Happened To Cherry’s Father?

The Girlfriend

When Cherry visits her father, he reacts dramatically to her presence, prompting her departure. This serves as an initial hint that she may be responsible for his condition. Later revelations indicate that Cherry confronted her father about abandoning her and her mother and ultimately pushed him down.

From how she addresses this incident in the final episode, it appears that Cherry acted out of anger rather than impulse or remorse. This suggests that previous drastic actions—such as injuring herself and vandalizing art—were likely calculated rather than emotional responses.

Is Cherry After Daniel’s Money?

The Girlfriend alternates between perspectives of Cherry and Laura, each portraying the story quite differently. From Laura’s viewpoint, Cherry appears as a woman who is primarily interested in Daniel for his wealth.

In Michelle Frances’ book adaptation, there is a stronger case for this being true. However, this does not seem entirely accurate in Prime Video’s original series.

Cherry does utilize Daniel’s money occasionally but not excessively. Even when she takes extra money from flights, it is typically spent on clothes intended to impress Daniel’s family so she can fit in with them. Her actions are less self-serving and more about making a positive impression on the family of someone she loves.

More often than not, she incurs debt trying to impress Daniel without disclosing how much she’s spent. Despite facing disadvantages due to her upbringing, she’s striving for success based on her own merits at work. Additionally, she’s hesitant about dating Daniel because he is wealthy and described as “a wanker.” Thus it seems more plausible that she chose Daniel based on personality rather than financial gain.

Is Laura In Love With Her Son?

Throughout the series, while Laura believes that Cherry seeks Daniel’s wealth, Cherry feels confident that Laura harbors romantic feelings for her son. Although it may be easy to dismiss this notion initially, there are elements supporting its validity. While Laura may not be explicitly in love with him per se, she engages in emotional incest with him.

She expects him to meet her emotional needs as though he were a partner rather than allowing him to prioritize his own desires as an adult should do. Their relationship becomes so intertwined that he lies about Laura’s inappropriate behavior to safeguard her reputation and feels guilty when she experiences distress.

Laura displays excessive physical affection towards Daniel—so much so that viewers may find it unsettling at times throughout The Girlfriend. At one point they even share a kiss on the lips. For these reasons and others still unexplored within this narrative framework—this story embodies both Oedipal themes (where a son loves his mother) and Jocastal themes (where roles are reversed).

Howard &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;auml;s Open Relationship Explained

Throughout The Girlfriend series arc unfolds where Howard desperately tries pleasing his wife Laura by initially opening their marriage dynamics up—finding another girlfriend named Mariane believing this aligns with what his wife desires—only later agreeing upon closing things off after she expresses wanting such change resulting in breaking up with Marianne.

Unfortunately nothing Howard does seems sufficient enough for Laura who continually prioritizes all attention onto their son sacrificing time spent together as husband-wife duo instead focusing solely on their child’s needs leaving Howard feeling neglected emotionally throughout this process while only finding joy through interactions shared between himself alongside ex girlfriend Lilith whom brings forth some semblance of happiness back into life despite uncertainty surrounding whether true happiness exists within these moments or if simply enabling toxic connections between herself/himself alongside son ultimately leads back down dark paths yet again eventually leading back towards unhealthy cycles repeating themselves over time again further complicating matters even more creating tension between everyone involved ultimately culminating into explosive confrontations later down line leading towards inevitable clashes occurring frequently thereafter as well!
