It’s time to shovel some coal into the Rumor Mill furnaces, folks, because whispers around the internet suggest that Hamnet and Eternals director Chloé Zhao could helm the next installment of Paramount‘s Mission: Impossible franchise. Wait! The last movie in the series is called Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, so what gives? Really? Are you aware of how much Tom Cruise loves the Mission Impossible franchise? Or how much money is there with the potential of another sequel? Granted, the last two installments of the franchise didn’t do gangbusters like Cruise and Paramount would have hoped, but who’s to say assigning Zhao to the next chapter won’t give the series a fresh start?
Where did this rumor start?
The origin of this rumor can be traced back to Deuxmoi, known as the “curators of pop culture.” They ignited the Mission: Impossible speculation on Instagram, claiming that Tom Cruise sought Chloé Zhao to write and direct Mission: Impossible 9, and that a treatment has been developed. However, it’s important to note that Deuxmoi has not disclosed its sources, meaning this could be hearsay. If Zhao were to direct Mission: Impossible 9, she would be the first new director on the franchise since 2015, following Christopher McQuarrie’s direction of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
Let Zhao cook!
While today’s “news” is just a rumor, I love the idea of Chloé Zhao directing the next chapter of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Hamnet was excellent, and I’m a staunch defender of Zhao’s MCU film Eternals. She has an incredible eye and a passion for on-location shooting, suggesting that M:I 9 may include breathtaking vistas and venues for outrageous action sequences. It’s not like the franchise hasn’t done that already, but Zhao is known for extracting beauty from the world in unpredictable ways. Zhao would likely give the Mission: Impossible franchise a much-needed kick in the pants. McQuarrie has done an exceptional job over the past several years, though perhaps it’s time to pass the torch to someone new.
