Cillian Murphy’s quickly forgotten John Wick replacement is slicing up streaming charts as fans await the arrival of his next movie. In 2019, Murphy starred opposite Helen Mirren (MobLand) and Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast) in Anna, an action thriller following a young woman who made a career for herself in the fashion world, yet she’s also one of the world’s most dangerous assassins. In America, Anna is streaming on MovieSphere by Lionsgate, but globally, the film is charting in the VOD top 10 in France and several other countries. It also stars The Last Front veteran Sasha Luss as Anna.
Anna was panned heavily by critics upon release, enough so that it earned a rotten 34% on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. This comes from 73 reviews, so it’s certainly a large enough sample size. However, audiences were able to find some enjoyment in the film as they awaited the fourth chapter in Keanu Reeves’ hit action franchise. Anna earned a solid 81% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. The film grossed $30 million at the box office, and it was written and directed by Luc Besson. Besson will next direct a new take on Dracula, starring Christoph Waltz.
Fans are rushing to see Anna on streaming ahead of the arrival of The Immortal Man, the Peaky Blinders sequel movie that will see Murphy reprise his role as Thomas Shelby. Murphy, fresh off his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer, recently starred in the quiet Netflix original drama, Steve. He was also seen in the touching 2024 drama, Small Things Like These, and he’ll star in a third 28 Years Later movie which is in the works at Sony.
When Does ‘The Immortal Man’ Come Out?
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man will be released in select theaters on March 6, and on Netflix around the world two weeks later on March 20. Netflix has been testing this model on some of its biggest films dating back to last year, such as Train Dreams (Joel Edgerton) and A House of Dynamite (Idris Elba). Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan have joined the cast ofThe Immortal Man alongside Murphy, and the film will follow Tommy Shelby as he returns to Birmingham during the heat of WWII and gets involved in secret missions. Steven Knight wrote the script, and Tom Harper directed the film.
Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and coverage of Murphy’s future projects.
