In recent weeks, news surfaced regarding the anticipated second season of Prime Video’s Citadel, indicating a significant delay in its release and a halt on various planned spinoffs. A new report from The Hollywood Reporter sheds light on the situation, revealing that these spinoffs are not just on hold but are being completely scrapped. This shift in strategy could have far-reaching implications for the Citadel franchise and its future direction.
However, not all is lost for fans of the Citadel universe. According to Vernon Sanders, the head of TV at Amazon MGM Studios, elements from what were intended to be the second seasons of Italy’s Citadel: Diana and India’s Citadel: Honey Bunny will be integrated into the upcoming new season of Citadel. This decision aims to retain the essence of these international stories while enhancing the main series that fans have come to love.
“Having successfully traversed India and Italy, storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel. While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet,” Sanders stated. “With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason, and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore. We’re excited to share what’s next when Citadel Season 2 premieres globally in Q2 of 2026.“
Initially, Citadel was envisioned as Amazon’s counterpart to the iconic James Bond franchise. However, with Amazon now owning the rights to James Bond, the necessity for Citadel has diminished significantly. Moreover, the production costs for the series have been astronomical. The extensive reshoots required for the first season led to it becoming one of the most expensive television shows ever made, with reports suggesting that the six episodes accumulated costs of around $300 million. The second season is reportedly encountering similar challenges, as prior reports indicated that executives were “unhappy with what they have seen so far of season two.“
The feedback from critics regarding the first season of Citadel has been mixed; however, our own Alex Maidy expressed admiration for the series. “From the excellent special effects to the intense fight choreography, there is almost nothing I did not love about Citadel,” Maidy commented. “The marketing push behind this series is well deserved, as Amazon is about to have another marquee hit on its hands. Richard Madden never needs to be James Bond on the big screen as he has found an original character that sets himself apart from the 007 legacy.” For more insights, you can read the complete review right here.
