Subscribers of HBO Max can now enjoy one of the finest classic comedy films from the 1980s on the streaming service, along with its sequel set to release in 2025.
As of today, fans of Rob Reiner’s mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap can finally stream the 1984 cult classic on HBO Max. Additionally, three months after its theatrical release, the movie’s sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which reunites the fictional heavy metal band featuring Christopher Guest’s Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean’s David St. Hubbins, and Harry Shearer’s Derek Smalls, is now available for streaming as well.
What do we know about the Spinal Tap sequel?
“Estranged bandmates David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls are forced to reunite for one final concert,” reads the official synopsis of the sequel. “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues also marks the return of documentarian Marty Di Bergi, who once again tries to capture his favorite metal gods as they contemplate mortality, hoping that their 12th drummer doesn’t join them in The Great Beyond. Spinal Tap wrestles with their checkered past to put on a concert that they hope will solidify their place in the pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll.”
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues was directed by filmmaker Rob Reiner, known for The Princess Bride, who co-wrote the screenplay with Guest, McKean, and Shearer. The sequel also features appearances from music legends Paul McCartney and Elton John, along with Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. In addition to leading the cast, Guest, McKean, and Shearer also served as producers alongside Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matt George. Since its theatrical release, the movie has garnered a Tomatometer rating of 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 133 reviews. This is significantly lower than the 1984 movie’s Certified Fresh score, which currently stands at 98% based on 175 reviews.
