Cancelled? Not at all! The upcoming sequel series planned for Clueless is still on track. Following the recent merger of Skydance, there have been changes with CBS and Paramount. Now CBS Studios and Paramount TV Studios operate as separate entities. But what does this mean for projects associated with the studio? According to Deadline, the Clueless sequel series, which is currently in development at Peacock instead of Paramount or CBS, is progressing as planned. The 90’s teen romcom featuring Alicia Silverstone was a Paramount title, and Deadline reports that CBS Studios is working to make the intellectual property available for television, a process that has been ongoing for several years. As the film celebrates its 30th anniversary, the sequel series was announced back in April, with Silverstone set to reprise her role as Cher Horowitz. The original film also featured Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, and the late Brittany Murphy.
The premise of the original film is as follows:
“Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking order. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first encourages two teachers to date each other. Buoyed by her success, she decides to give hopelessly clumsy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was — and falls for him.”
‘Clueless’ Is Actually Based on a Jane Austen Novel
The 82% Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes film from 1995 is actually a reimagining of the Regency-era novel, Emma by Jane Austen. Its premise aligns with both Cher and Emma meddling in matchmaking while inadvertently falling in love themselves. The most recent adaptation of Emma was the 2020 EMMA., which starred Anya Taylor-Joy as Emma Woodhouse, Johnny Flynn as George Knightley, and Callum Turner as Frank Churchill. Although there was an attempt to continue the story of Clueless in the 90s with a series featuring Rachel Blanchard as Cher, that series, which ran for three seasons, is largely forgotten and was not well-received. Silverstone’s return to whatever Peacock is developing looks promising, and if the timeless Paul Rudd joins the project as well, it would be even better. It wouldn’t be surprising if Cher had a child who is just as meddlesome as she was in high school, providing plenty of opportunities for writers to explore.
Clueless is available for streaming on Peacock. Stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates.
