Colin Woodell’s Intrigue with ‘Pulse’ Stems from the Complex Relationship Between Phillips and Danny

“I just felt like it was something I hadn’t seen before.”

Collider: What stood out to you about this TV series when you first encountered it? What motivated you to join the cast?

COLIN WOODELL: There were several compelling elements. The unique backdrop of an impending hurricane creates an external tension that characters must confront. However, the core of the story, from an acting perspective, revolves around the intricate interpersonal relationships, particularly between Phillips and Danny, which is undeniably complex. There’s something remarkably engaging about exploring these dynamics in a hospital environment, where the stakes are incredibly high, and the characters are tasked with saving lives while navigating their own emotional landscapes. This layered storytelling felt fresh and exciting, and I was genuinely thrilled to be a part of it.

One intriguing aspect of medical dramas is considering how you would feel about entrusting your life to the doctors portrayed on-screen. How do you perceive the characters in this context?

WOODELL: That’s an insightful question. If you asked Colin to perform a life-saving procedure, I’d hesitate to vouch for his abilities. However, when it comes to Phillips, I have full confidence in him. He is driven by a profound desire to prove his worth as a medical professional. What makes this hospital particularly intriguing is its competitive nature; it ranks among the most challenging institutions in Miami, and the young doctors are fiercely motivated to establish their credibility. Their every move is scrutinized, making them take their responsibilities incredibly seriously. My sole experience in an emergency room was when I endured a kidney stone, which was excruciating. I was admitted on Labor Day weekend, and I observed these doctors who were handling extraordinary situations with remarkable composure. It highlighted the heroism inherent in their profession and the unpredictable challenges they face daily.

In your previous role in The Continental, the environment was quite different. Does a series like Pulse require a different level of endurance? Is it challenging to convincingly portray a doctor?

WOODELL: Absolutely, the demands are distinct. We had medical experts supervise our performances to ensure we appeared credible in our roles. This added an unexpected layer of pressure. Interestingly, compared to performing stunts, the medical scenes are like a choreographed dance, often requiring six to eight hours to shoot. Maintaining a high level of focus is essential, and while breaks and light-hearted moments are beneficial, the gravity of pretending to save a life engages a unique part of your brain. In fact, I found the exhaustion from these medical scenes surpassed that of any stunt choreography from The Continental. With stunts, you have time to rehearse and prepare, but in Pulse, you often work with dummies and don’t know your eventual scene partner until the last moment. Incorporating various elements like nurses, cameras, and lights adds complexity, demanding readiness for any situation.

Dr. Phillips’ Journey in ‘Pulse’ Is a Quest for Self-Worth and Validation

“Phillips definitely has a bit of prodigal son syndrome.”

What does it signify for Dr. Phillips to operate in this hospital? Despite his success and respect among peers, he faces challenges related to his relationship with Danny. How do these dynamics play out?

WOODELL: This duality makes Phillips a relatable character. It’s a topic currently prevalent in discussions around the film industry. Nepotism is a significant concern, and I can only imagine the difficulties one might face when constantly questioned about their capabilities and achievements. Phillips embodies this struggle, grappling with his father’s shadow—an influential figure in the medical field we never meet but whose legacy looms large. Coming from a prestigious medical family, he often wonders if he truly deserves his position. This internal conflict resonates with me; I, too, strive to validate my successes and question my worth. This theme permeates his journey throughout the season, affecting not just his career, but also his personal relationships, as he navigates whether people appreciate him for who he is or solely because of his family name.

To be a successful doctor, one must possess a certain level of confidence, believing in their ability to save lives.

WOODELL: His professional performance demands validation, yet the competitive landscape of medicine means doubts and judgments are always present. The confidence required to navigate this field can sometimes feel false, yet it is essential. In life-and-death situations, where decisions must be made rapidly, trusting oneself and one’s skills is crucial.

How does Danny impact Phillips’ character development?

WOODELL: It’s fascinating to observe Phillips before joining Maguire; he was at the pinnacle of his career. His role as Chief Resident was well-earned, and his medical proficiency was exceptional. However, Danny’s arrival disrupts his equilibrium, prompting him to grapple with authenticity and the desire to impress her while also fulfilling his medical duties. This exploration was far more enjoyable than the parts of his character that were merely smooth sailing. I can relate to that feeling when someone enters a space and evokes a desire to impress, leading to self-doubt about every word spoken or action taken. Danny undeniably influences him from the outset.

“The thing that me and Willa wanted to capture was the complexity, the flaws, and the nuance that goes into any relationship.”

As the audience initially views Phillips as a potential antagonist due to the circumstances surrounding Danny’s report, how did you navigate his emotional journey throughout the series?

WOODELL: This was a challenging aspect for me. My aim was to depict Phillips in a way that honored both women’s and men’s experiences within this narrative. My collaboration with Willa, along with our creators, Zoe Robyn and Carlton Cuse, was focused on capturing the complexity, imperfections, and nuances inherent in any relationship. It was essential for Phillips to take responsibility for his actions, while also acknowledging his perception of the relationship. It required me to set aside my personal feelings as an actor, prioritizing advocacy for my character while trusting the writers’ vision, which was a daunting aspect of this journey.

As colleagues begin to learn about the events between Phillips and Danny, how does their judgment evolve?

WOODELL: Precisely, and this was an enlightening aspect. While the audience gains insights from both involved parties, the perspective of their colleagues enriches the narrative. It highlights the complexities and varied interpretations surrounding such sensitive topics. Ultimately, understanding is often limited to those directly involved in the scenario, and even then, personal biases may cloud judgment.

What was your experience in determining how the ensemble cast would interact and complement each other?

WOODELL: It was an enjoyable process. We were fortunate to film in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a vibrant city, but after a while, we ran out of activities to fill our time. With the competitive nature inherent in the lives of residents, we found ways to bond, whether through game nights or bowling, fostering a supportive yet competitive atmosphere. This duality is crucial; while we cheered each other on, we also had a playful desire to outdo one another outside of work. This dynamic enhances the show’s appeal, and I believe it translates to the screen effectively.

Was there a standout competitor among your cast?

WOODELL: Absolutely! There is one person who stands out as particularly competitive, and I think everyone would agree. I can’t name names, but there is definitely a notable winner among us.

“I was really crushed that Phillips and Danny didn’t end up together.”

As the season concludes, significant events have unfolded that will undoubtedly influence a potential second season. What are your thoughts on the direction of a Season 2?

WOODELL: There’s a wealth of storylines waiting to be explored. I was genuinely disappointed that Phillips and Danny did not end up together. Nevertheless, both characters still have considerable personal growth ahead of them. If a second season materializes, I’m eager to see how the tension between them evolves. Additionally, Elijah’s feelings for Danny add another layer of complexity. What dynamics might arise among the three? Furthermore, the introduction of new characters could provide exciting opportunities for fresh storylines. I am truly intrigued by the possibilities.
