As the dust settles on a disappointing October box office, film enthusiasts and industry analysts are examining the reasons behind the month’s lackluster performance. A significant factor is the poor ending to the month, with last weekend’s financial results falling short of expectations. This downturn can be attributed to the studios’ neglect of new horror films, a genre that typically thrives during the Halloween season. While Smile 2 and Terrifier 3 had elevated last year’s offerings, this year’s lineup has left audiences with few enticing options to spend their money.
This situation allowed Colleen Hoover’s latest adaptation, Regretting You, to dominate the Halloween weekend, despite its disconnect with the holiday’s spirit. The film grossed $8.1 million from nearly 3,500 theaters nationwide, averaging $2,365 per theater. This figure is notably disappointing when compared to last year’s Halloween weekend leader, Venom: The Last Dance, which achieved an average of $6,270 per theater. Nevertheless, despite the overall box office slump, Regretting You‘s strong earnings have propelled it into the top 300 highest-grossing Paramount Pictures movies ever, surpassing a lesser-known film produced by Tom Cruise: Elizabethtown.
What is ‘Regretting You’ About?
Following the success of It Ends With Us last year, Regretting You brings audiences back into Hoover’s world of intricate narratives, featuring a cast of well-known actors. The film stars Allison Williams as Morgan Grant, Mckenna Grace as Clara Grant, Dave Franco as Jonah Sullivan, Mason Thames as Miller Adams, and Scott Eastwood as Chris Grant, directed by Josh Boone from a screenplay by Susan McMartin. Despite winning the box office for the weekend, it has received a dismal critical response, earning only 29% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. For those who have yet to see it, the film’s synopsis states:
“Based on the bestselling book, REGRETTING YOU introduces audiences to Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) and her daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace) as they explore what’s left behind after a devastating accident reveals a shocking betrayal and forces them to confront family secrets, redefine love, and rediscover each other.”
Regretting You has outperformed a forgotten Tom Cruise project at the box office. Stay tuned to Collider for updates on box office news.
