Colter Doesn’t Need to Be a Lone Wolf Anymore

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Tracker Season 3, Episode 2.

Well, folks, CBS’s best action drama is finally back, and Tracker Season 3 is gearing up to be an exciting start to this next chapter of Colter Shaw’s (Justin Hartley) journey. After that dark reveal at the end of the Season 2 finale, the third season opener, “The Process,” picks up three weeks later as Colter is still processing what he found out about his father’s death. But “The Process” ended on another cliffhanger, leading into the second half of this new short-term arc, “Leverage.” Here’s what you need to know about the second episode of this new season, concluding The Process story seemingly for good.

“Leverage” Continues Right Where ‘Tracker’s Season 3 Premiere Left Off

Before we jump into “Leverage,” here’s a quick recap of what happened last week in “The Process.” Colter and Russell (Jensen Ackles) took on a job from one of Reenie’s (Fiona Rene) clients, Cal Rodgers (Brandon Keener), whose ex-wife Lisa (Jules Willcox) and their daughter Hailey (Nevis Unipan) are strangely missing. Lisa’s boyfriend, Kurt Foster (Andy Magee), is originally a suspect until the Shaw brothers find him dead. As it turns out, Lisa is being blackmailed by a sender whose texts continue to disappear. This leads the Shaws to a man named Raymond Ockman (Kai Lennox), who is also being forced to harm and kidnap others by “The Process.” Ockman has kidnapped Hailey, though he reveals to Colter and Russell her location (though his sister is killed by The Process as a result of his “failure”). After Ockman is carted away, the Shaw brothers each get a text. Whoever is behind all of this welcomes them to The Process, and we’re left wondering just what that means for Colter and his brother.

Picking up right where last week’s episode left off, “Leverage” starts with Harith Holmes (Omid Abtahi) returning home to his wife, Mona (Nisreen Slim), and son after completing a job for The Process. As it turns out, this string of blackmailed victims can only continue if the next person does their job. However, with Ockman’s failure to complete his mission, The Process fell back to Harith, threatening to kidnap his son again if he does not comply. Harith gets another text from The Process, ordering him to track down Colter and Russell. Meanwhile, the Shaw brothers meet Randy (Chris Lee) at a diner, who reveals that The Process has strung a trail of text chains that lead back to Ockman, attempting to frame him for this dangerous game. Of course, the Shaws don’t believe it, and neither do we. If it were that simple, this story wouldn’t have been two parts.

Elsewhere, Reenie meets with Ockman at the jail to try and get information out of him, but he’s spooked by one of the security guards who gives him a strange look. Despite Reenie’s protests, Ockman refuses to listen, believing that she isn’t simply a lawyer but actually a part of The Process itself. Reenie calls the Shaw brothers and Randy at the diner, where Harith has likewise arrived and is watching them from afar. While Russell decides to convince Reenie to go with him to investigate some coordinates that Randy gives him, Colter goes to speak with Lisa, hoping to better understand how The Process works. She reveals that she was blackmailed by The Process, which threatened to reveal how she helped Kurt scam her co-workers and family. So, as far as we can tell, The Process is all about preying on the fears of those it chooses, specifically the fear of secrets revealed.

Tracker then pivots to Russell and Reenie in the car, where we learn that Reenie has been reeling from her and Elliot’s (Michael Rady) near-death experiences in last season’s “Rules of the Game.” Though it’s been weeks, she’s still quite shaken by being nearly killed before Colter rescued her. We also learn that she and Elliot broke up last week, which Russell wasn’t too broken up to hear. But as Reenie is spilling the secrets of her heart, Russell notices that they’re being followed. The only way to know for sure is to stop, so he insists that they pull over. While stopped, Reenie gets a call that Raymond Ockman is dead, having seemingly killed himself in his cell. But things go from bad to worse once they get back on the road as Russell again notices the tail. Yet instead of being followed, he turns around and forces the vehicle (driven by Harith) off the road in a deadly game of on-road chicken. Harith is still alive but he’s unconscious.

Meanwhile, Colter goes to the office building location that The Process sent Lisa to back in “The Process” before he interrupts her. While on the phone with Randy, he is stalked by a man who is seemingly a part of The Process but manages to recover a distinct-looking briefcase that Randy discovers was made by a manufacturer that doesn’t make them any longer. But even more interesting is that inside the case is evidence connecting Ockman to a younger student at the school he teaches at, suggesting an inappropriate relationship between them. After this, Colter meets up with Russell who has begun to interrogate Harith. Harith refuses to acknowledge The Process at first but eventually reveals that one can “be called upon at any time,” adding that this has been happening for at least a decade. After Colter and Russell fake the latter’s death (putting Harith in the clear for now), they allow Harith to contact his son whose birthday is today. Afterward, Russell takes Harith to the location of the next Process targets—a newly married couple—and keeps them all in a secured location for the time being.

“Leverage” Hints at ‘Tracker’s Overarching Mythology Without Dwelling On It

After confirming that Ockman didn’t kill himself, Reenie and Randy contact Colter giving him information about Dr. Susanna Tate—a retired university professor who used to order these specific briefcases in bulk. Upon meeting with Tate, Colter learns that she once ran an experiment called “The Process of Leverage and Obedience.” But when certain students in her class began exhibiting sadistic tendencies, Tate closed the study. Of course, certain students—Don Schneider, Gillian Meeks, and Philip Jost—were angered by this with Schneider specifically hoping to continue The Process on their own. It’s here that Colter and Russell decide to finish the job that Russell and Reenie started earlier by going to investigate the coordinates Randy pulled from the decrypted text messages—and it’s here that things get interesting.

Upon breaking into the compound that hosts The Process, Russell chases Jost to his getaway car shooting him dead in self-defense. Simultaneously, Colter investigates the compound only to find Schneider and his intensive computer system which has grown into a beast of its own. Schneider reveals that The Process doesn’t need him anymore—that it can find new targets all on its own now. He also brings up information about Colter’s sister Dory (Melissa Roxburgh) and mother Mary Dove Shaw (Wendy Crewson) asking what he would be willing to do to save his family. He also wonders who he would save first. But before Schneider can press Colter about his family secrets further—something Colter knows far too much about—he knocks out the villain. Unwilling to leave any of their family secrets (or The Process in general) behind for someone else to get hold of, Colter and Russell destroy the computer system ending the game for good.

In the aftermath of “Leverage,” Reenie tells Colter and Russell that the feds are trying to track down Gillian Meeks next hoping to ensure that The Process has stopped completely after Schneider and Jost were taken out of play. Though Colter and Russell took out the algorithm—that doesn’t mean similar experiments couldn’t be running elsewhere. But that’s another episode’s problem. As Colter and Russell drive, the latter reminds his younger brother that they’re going to have to talk about what they learned about their father’s death—that Otto Waldron (Alex Fernandez) killed Ashton (Lee Tergesen) after being asked by Mary to confront him—at some point in the near future. Though Colter isn’t ready to speak with his mother now—that day will come in time. Until then,Russell promisesto help Colter track down the government number he found in connection with their father’s work hoping to do some good in the world along the way. While Jensen Ackles is not yet a recurring cast member on Tracker it’s episodes like this that make us wish this were a two-man show.

Tracker airs Sundays on CBS and is available for streaming on Paramount+.
