The first film in the The Conjuring series led to an immensely popular spin-off titled Annabelle, which proved so successful that it developed its own franchise. Consequently, when news broke that The Conjuring 2 would also receive two spin-offs, it was well-received by fans. One of these spin-offs, The Nun, performed well enough to warrant a sequel. The other potential project was The Crooked Man. However, eight years have elapsed since the initial announcement of The Crooked Man, and indications suggest that production is far from imminent. Two years ago, producer James Wan revealed that the project had been shelved due to circumstances beyond his control. Despite this setback, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wan expressed his continued desire to bring this film to life.
In past conversations, Wan shared his vision for the Conjuring Universe with Entertainment Weekly, stating, “Our goal with the Conjuring Universe is to ensure that each of our spin-offs possesses a distinct flavor. For instance, Annabelle embodies the classic haunted doll narrative. Conversely, with The Crooked Man, I envision steering it towards a dark fairytale vibe, rich in whimsy and creative storytelling. I love the concept of each film in the Conjuring Universe having its unique essence, ensuring they don’t feel redundant or repetitive.” Wan indicated that an exciting narrative existed for The Crooked Man, though he refrained from divulging any specific plot details.
In the latest interview, Wan reiterated, “The concept for this movie remains vivid in my mind, and I sincerely hope to bring it to fruition someday. I frequently receive messages from fans yearning for a Crooked Man movie. As a fan myself, I would love to see it happen, provided I can persuade the studio to greenlight it.” Additionally, Peter Safran, a fellow producer of the Conjuring franchise, mentioned, “Initially, we believed that the Crooked Man would become the equivalent of Annabelle for Conjuring 2. However, audience reactions indicated a stronger interest in the nun character. It’s crucial to heed the voices of our fans and the audience.”
While I personally had reservations about the viability of a film centered on the Crooked Man, the evident enthusiasm from fans and Wan’s willingness to pursue the project suggest that Warner Bros. should consider moving forward with it. The interest is palpable, and there seems to be a unique opportunity to explore this character further within the horror genre.
