Controversial Sci-Fi Sequel by Ridley Scott Gains Streaming Popularity

Beginning in 1979, one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time came into existence, and although it wasn’t an instant favorite, that quickly changed in the years that followed. Alien, created by screenwriters Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, launched the film series with the 1979 movie of the same name directed by Ridley Scott, marking his first entry in the franchise. His next two installments didn’t arrive until more than three decades later, the latter of which became his most divisive to date.

As fans already know, Scott’s later entries in the franchise—Prometheus and Alien: Covenant—proved quite polarizing, as both films diverged from the franchise tradition, though one did so more than the other. Serving as the sixth feature film in the series, Alien: Covenant was released in May 2017 as a direct sequel to Prometheus, with Michael Fassbender starring in dual roles as David 8 and Walter 1, two synthetic androids. David is an older model and a former crew member of the ill-fated Prometheus mission, while Walter is a newer model assigned to oversee the Covenant.

Almost a decade after its release, the sci-fi horror film has quietly reached a streaming milestone that may have gone unnoticed by many fans. As of this writing, Alien: Covenant has spent over 30 days on HBO Max’s trending charts, ranking among the most-watched titles in the U.S. The 65% Rotten Tomatoes movie, which currently sits among the platform’s top 10 movies, isn’t the only Alien installment gaining traction—Alien and Alien: Romulus are also trending, highlighting the franchise’s enduring popularity across decades.
