In the original book, Jamie experiences a turning point after battling pneumonia, which leads him to participate in a medical trial that grants him additional time. The film’s climax captures Anna at his bedside as he passes away, creating a poignant moment.

“It’s better like that,” Corey reflects, as reported by EW. “It’s more powerful. The book is heading in that direction, and it would feel disingenuous for Jamie to articulate profound thoughts while Anna comprehends that philosophy of life [and not end there].”

“The remarkable aspect is that Jamie genuinely believes in these concepts — that ‘forever is composed of nows’ — despite having limited time left,” he elaborated. “What’s truly extraordinary is his ability to embrace these beliefs and engage in meaningful experiences with so little time remaining. If that weren’t the case, it would seem like we’re undermining his convictions.”

Sofia, who also serves as an executive producer for the film, emphasizes that the ending is intentionally left somewhat open to interpretation.

“Even though it’s evident that Anna is alone at the conclusion,” she noted. “We chose to keep it slightly ambiguous because our goal was to conclude the film with a sense of hope and positivity.”
