As we move further away from the compelling Season 2 finale of Severance, which aired over a month ago, discussions about the already confirmed Season 3 remain relatively subdued. Recently, the show’s creator, Dan Erickson, provided his perspective on a significant debate among fans. In the Season 2 finale, the character Mark, portrayed by Adam Scott, chooses to remain with Helly, played by Britt Lower, at the enigmatic Lumon rather than return to his outie’s wife, Gemma, acted by Dichen Lachman. This choice has sparked speculation among fans, particularly the theory that Mark may actually be involved with Helly’s outie, Helena, who is thought to be manipulating Mark by impersonating her innie. However, Erickson clarified during a recent interview with Variety that this idea is merely conjecture.
“I think that people really do love Gemma and they love Mark and Gemma, and the idea of Mark and Helly sort of making this choice that is so heartbreaking, I think some people have trouble with that. And I understand it — they should.”
Erickson elaborated on this situation, confirming that it is not Helena who is exploiting Mark’s vulnerabilities. Instead, he views Mark’s decision as a powerful moment of self-assertion and autonomy. He emphasized the importance of personal choice and existence in this context:
“I don’t see it as a moment of somebody stealing somebody else’s lover. I see it as a moment of somebody claiming their own autonomy and the importance of their own existence.”
