As we’re fast approaching the launch of Crimson Desert, the internet is ablaze with rumors and expectations for the game. For every hopeful out there, there is a skeptic ready to crush their dreams. Will Crimson Desert be the next Tears of the Kingdom or Elden Ring? Or perhaps we’re going to fall into the Mindseye or Concord bargain bin at launch.
One thing that’s certain is that nobody can seem to agree on what the review scores are going to look like in March. Over on X, the conversation is heating up between two camps. Some believe this is a potential game of the year scenario, while others are convinced that all the promises make Crimson Desert seem just a little too good to be true. Who will be right come March 19?
Crimson Desert Looks Too Good To Be True
All That Glitters Ain’t Gold
Let’s face it, we’ve been burned many times before, with some games promising the moon on a stick only to launch weaker than noodle soup. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man’s Sky were released in undercooked forms, only to turn things around again with constant updates and complete overhauls. Others, like Watch Dogs and Starfield, never lived up to their promises and continue to disappoint players to this day.
X user DEVNIX sums up Crimson Desert‘s potential for two very different outcomes, claiming that the game will either be a “40 or a 90” on Metacritic. Some other users, however, are expecting a more standard result, and Pyo’s prediction of a 79 Metascore sits in a popular spot.
With Crimson Desert’s impressive list of gameplay features and stellar visuals, it does seem too good to be true. The game aims to blend all the best elements from games like The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Tears of the Kingdom, and even Dragon’s Dogma 2, to name but a few. It feels like a game where you can do virtually anything, traversing a huge world and adopting your own playstyle as you complete quests as Kliff or one of the other recently revealed playable characters.
Puzzle-solving on floating islands like Zelda, combat and boss battles on a scale with Elden Ring, mountable creatures and other-worldly tech like Assassin’s Creed, wrestling moves, pole-vaulting, flying feather cloaks, grappling guns, giant mech suits, large-scale battles — it’s all a bit much to believe. Throw in dragons, and it’s hard not to hop on the hype train.
Crimson Desert Reviews Will Be Interesting
Don’t Stop Believing
With Crimson Desert having recently gone gold, the release date of March 19 is pretty much confirmed. That means we won’t have to wait too long to see what critics and players alike think of the game. It’s hard not to get hyped, though, as every reveal trailer has truly impressed. If there are any cracks, they are well hidden. At face value, Crimson Desert appears to be an exciting adventure worth your time.
If Pearl Abyss manages to pull off even three-quarters of the content it’s promising, then we’re in for the thrill ride of the year. It probably won’t beat GTA 6 for GOTY, but if the gameplay is as satisfying as it looks and the quests are well written and executed, then I think we’re in for a grand old time. I, for one, sit firmly in the hopeful camp. Crimson Desert could be a great stopgap to help scratch that GTA 6 itch between now and November.
