In November of last year, we were devastated to receive the news that the beloved genre icon Tony Todd had passed away at the age of 69. Fortunately, fans can still anticipate some of Todd’s incredible performances, as he had completed work on several projects that were in post-production at the time of his passing. One such project is Final Destination: Bloodlines, set to hit theaters on May 16th. Additionally, we have exciting news: Charles Band, the founder of Full Moon Features, is honoring Todd’s legacy by resurrecting a long-lost project they collaborated on back in 2005, a horror film titled Cutter’s Club! Although the film faced significant financial hurdles towards the end of its production and was lost in a lab for over twenty years, Band has successfully recovered and completed it. This thrilling horror film will be available for streaming on the Tubi platform starting on May 1.
Here’s a captivating look at the official synopsis: In this “lost” film from Full Moon, horror legend Tony Todd stars in a gory, sci-fi-infused horror/thriller directed by Charles Band, featuring stunning 35mm cinematography by the late, great Mac Ahlberg. The plot follows two young medical students, played by Melissa Searing and Davee Youngblood, who become embroiled in a secretive society of surgery enthusiasts and monster creators known as the “Cutters Club,” led by a deranged doctor. This film is packed with chilling creatures, gruesome carnage, and unsettling malpractice, making it a must-see for horror aficionados. Cutter’s Club has been revived from near oblivion, and it beautifully serves as Todd’s dramatic cinematic farewell. The late cinematographer Mac Ahlberg passed away in 2012, and John Carl Buechler, who was responsible for the film’s special effects, left us in 2019. Thus, the release of Cutter’s Club stands as a tribute to their enduring contributions to the horror genre and filmmaking.
In a heartfelt statement, Charles Band shared, “I filmed a feature two decades ago that starred Tony Todd called Cutter’s Club. Unfortunately, the funding ran out, and we had to halt production just two days shy of completing the film. Fortunately, we had shot the majority of it, and I always hoped to return and finish it once the financial situation improved. However, a year after production ceased, I received the disheartening news that the lab had lost the negative. The cinematographer, Mac Ahlberg, was the most talented I’ve ever worked with, and we filmed on 35mm. There are many more twists in this story over the years, but everything changed last November when we lost our star, Tony Todd. This inspired me to contact the lab for the twentieth time to inquire about the negative. Again, the answer was “No,” but then I decided to provide them with several company names under which the movie might have been archived. I even invented a few names that sounded like companies I might have formed years ago. Miraculously, the lab technician eventually called me back to say they had located the lost negative! The challenge then became piecing together the movie without the scenes we couldn’t shoot: I managed to resolve that (which is another story), and we’ve been in post-production for the past few months. Cutter’s Club is now finally completed!”
