Dan Trachtenberg secures first-look deal with Paramount

Key Takeaways

  • Trachtenberg’s Deal: Dan Trachtenberg has signed a three-year first-look deal with Paramount Pictures.
  • Return to Paramount: This marks Trachtenberg’s return to Paramount, where he made his first feature film.
  • Future of Predator: Fans are curious about the implications of this deal for the Predator franchise.
  • Streaming Release: Predator: Badlands will be available on Disney+ and Hulu starting February 12.

Dan Trachtenberg rejuvenated the Predator franchise in a big way with the back-to-back-to-back successes of Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers, and Predator: Badlands, but he’s jumping ship to Paramount Pictures. It’s been reported that Trachtenberg has signed a three-year first-look deal with the studio, where he will develop, direct, and produce feature projects with his producing partner, Ben Rosenblatt.

Trachtenberg Returns to Paramount

Trachtenberg made his first feature, 10 Cloverfield Lane, at Paramount, so this marks something of a return. “As a kid I remember seeing the Paramount logo and dreaming of the epic adventure that would follow,” said Trachtenberg in a statement. “Now to have the opportunity to bring new huge and emotional stories to giant screens is literally a dream come true. Ben and I cannot wait to join Dana, Josh, Don, and the entire Paramount team in pursuing our shared vision of making Paramount once again the apex of cinema.

Paramount co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg added, “Dan has an extraordinary ability to deliver films that are both daring and deeply entertaining. He has a rare instinct for tension, scale, and storytelling that connects with audiences worldwide. We’re excited to welcome him to the studio.

What Does This Mean for Predator?

Naturally, fans are wondering what this move means for the Predator franchise. Trachtenberg clearly still has many ideas for the future, even alluding to the possibility of Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as Dutch prior to the release of Badlands. A follow-up to Prey has also been teased.

As we don’t know the specifics of the deal, it’s too early to say how this will affect his relationship with Disney and the Predator franchise. First-look deals don’t mean that people can’t take jobs elsewhere; it’s just that the studio gets the first chance to review new projects.

Although I did enjoy Trachtenberg’s three Predator movies, I would be fine if someone else took the reins. Part of the fun of the franchise (and with Alien as well) is seeing how it gets reinvented under different directors. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn’t, but I love the experimentation.

It was recently announced that Predator: Badlands will start streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on February 12.
