After spending nearly a decade in retirement, Daniel Day-Lewis returned to acting last year with his son’s directorial debut, Anemone. The three-time Oscar winner left no stone unturned in promoting the movie, briefly setting aside his reclusive nature to do as much press as possible. Anemone opened to mixed reviews and did unremarkable business at the box office, joining the 2005 release The Ballad of Jack and Rose as one of the few forgettable films of Day-Lewis’ career. Like Anemone, The Ballad of Jack and Rose was also a family affair; it was directed by his wife, Rebecca Miller. Day-Lewis has spent the last two decades being extremely selective about the roles he takes on, and his movies tend to be events in and of themselves. He was, however, more prolific in the 1990s, which was when the world first began to take notice of his status as a generational talent. One of his earliest hits is now proving why Day-Lewis is one of the GOATS by staging a remarkable comeback on home video.

The movie was released 34 years ago, in 1992. This was shortly after Day-Lewis broke out with his Academy Award-winning role in My Left Foot. He would go on to star in the prison drama In the Name of the Father and the period drama The Age of Innocence. Day-Lewis remains best known for his work in historical films; he continued to do period movies till the very end of his pre-comeback career. His widely publicized “final” film was Phantom Thread, in which he played a dressmaker in 1950s England. His 1992 movie was also a historical epic, directed by Michael Mann.
