The third season of The White Lotus is set to premiere on HBO in just two weeks, and creator Mike White has hinted at a season that is ?much, much darker? than its earlier installments. In an interview with TIME, White expressed, ?I do feel like the other seasons were a rehearsal for this one.? He elaborated, mentioning that he will tackle themes he has never directed before. The upcoming season is set in an exclusive Thai resort, where the lives of various guests and employees intertwine over a week. White described the new characters as being ?all in some kind of hurt,? suggesting a deeper dive into the emotional struggles and existential dilemmas they face. ?They?re all dead, but they don?t know it? because it?s dealing with these existential tropes of facing into the nothingness of self [and] Buddhist themes that have life and death and ethical aspects, [the season] just got more heavy.?
Initially, White envisioned shooting the third season in Japan, but HBO encouraged him to consider Thailand instead. While uncertain, an unexpected hospitalization due to severe bronchitis during his location scouting inspired a significant breakthrough in his storytelling. ?They put me on a nebulizer. I didn?t sleep for like two nights, and by the next morning I was like, ?I think I have the plot,?? he recounted. ?The season is pretty much what happened that night?. I felt like I had the ending. And so I was like, ?I guess we?re shooting in Thailand.??
Continuing its tradition of featuring an outstanding ensemble, the third season includes a star-studded cast comprising Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jason Isaacs, Lalisa Manobal, Michelle Monaghan, Sam Nivola, Lek Patravadi, Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Tayme Thapthimthong, and Aimee Lou Wood.
